    There were less rules in 1941. Also back they if a train was late, the crew was told to speed up to make up time. A whole different world back then. Many mainlines were at least double track with some three and four.

    There is a small closet in the lounge. Unlike Chicago only one person works in the lounge at the front desk. Should be able to leave bags due to the lounge hours are 5 AM to 9 PM.     Every airport I have been to on Amtrak trips have rented a car for me with no questions. The only bad part is it cost more then a downtown location.

    Most of the time RJ Corman brings in heavy equipment and has the mainline open in one day. A big bulldozer is used to push the cars out of the way.

    Always in the middle of the train right next to the dinner. Usual is right ahead of the sleepers.

    When going though KC on the way to Chicago, I like to head for the dinner right after the train leaves the station. The Chief is in KC for about twenty minutes if on time. It is a crew change point and also a smoke stop.

    Raton Pass in New Mexico and Colorado has some 3 percent grades on the SWC route. For years it took three or four locomotives to get the chief over that pass.

    When should I buy my ticket?

    Are you planning on riding coach or sleeper? If sleeper you want to buy your ticket as soon as possible. Sleeper prices increase the closer to your travel dates.

    no more printed system timetables?

    The only reason I like the paper copy is it easier to compare times between trains when planning connection trains. Online you have to look at several screens to look at the times.
