Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H2

Has coffee been discontinued in sleeping cars? I recently took the the Lakeshore Limited from CHI to Rochester and Utica back to CHI. Neither NY sleeper had coffee on either train. And no, going to the dining car for coffee when you wake up is not an adequate substitute. If this is permanent...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Among all the doom and gloom regarding the new service, I can't help but think it was designed specifically for me. I live in Illinois and snowbird in the Tampa Bay area; and this makes it so much easier. Prior to #40, there wasn't even a train connection from Tampa to Chicago. The Star is...

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I recently had the crepes on the Lakeshore Ltd. Much better than the dry omlete and pancakes.

    Checked Baggage (luggage) discussion

Since when does the reservation system reserve luggage space? Bikes, yes, but not bags. Generally, whether baggage service is available is found in the services tab in the trip details link on the booking page once you select a train with origin and destination stations . For example, for the...

    Atlantic Coast (Silver/Palmetto/Carolinian) Service discussion 2024 H2

I see that I'm not the only one noticing the drop in dining car usage. I don't know whether it started before, during, or after the pandemic or whether it's mostly traditional, flex, or both.

    Illinois Zephyr and bicycles

I had to gaggle Forgottonia to find out what it is. One example of how the name came about is that the fastest highway route from Quincy to Chicago is over 290 miles, according to gaggle. On the other hand the Quincy Amtrak station is near milepost 256, which I presume is measured from Chicago.

    Illinois Zephyr and bicycles

Wow! I received an email from Illinois' Passenger Rail & Transit Communications Manager saying they have been in touch with Amtrak and they assure us that they have restored the standard capacity of 3 bikes per train for all future departures of trains 380-383. I tried a dummy booking and sure...

    Illinois Zephyr and bicycles

I used the contact page on the Illinois Dept. of Transportation to voice my concern. I hope Saddleshoes forgives me for paraphrasing a couple of sentences from his post.

    Illinois Zephyr and bicycles

I guess the next step is to contact the Illinois Dept. of Transportation. No, the bike slots are not sold out. The AGR rep I spoke to checked with someone who said bikes are not accepted.

    Illinois Zephyr and bicycles

At your suggestion I contacted the League of American Wheelies.

    Illinois Zephyr and bicycles

Does anyone know why the IZ (trains 380 and 383) no longer accepts bikes, even though its twin the Carl Sandburg (381 and 382) does? It's one of those odd cases where the website's "trip details/Services" pop up say that it does carry bikes; but they are sold out no matter what date you try. I...

    Amtrak consists 2024

That will help a little, if true.

    Amtrak consists 2024

A clarification please. Are you referring to existing trains or to future plans (the subject of this thread). As one example, the Capitol Limited not only has its two (as of early May) sleepers up front, but there are no noise buffers such as second engine, baggage car, or transdorm. This...

    Midwest Venture discussion 2023 Q3 -2024

I recently passed the Quincy, Il station as the northbound Carl Sandburg was just departing. It had 3 ventures and an amfleet. I assumed the amfleet was the old cafe/business class combo. But then I noticed that the first venture car had "business class" printed on its side. Are they now...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

When do you think this thru-routing will be available to book. I entered TPA (Tampa) to CHI and came up with Bus TPA to Orlando, Silver Meteor to WAS, and Cap Ltd to CHI and Bus TPA to Orlando, Silver Meteor to NYP, and Lake Shore Ltd to CHI. No mention of the Silver Star. A thru-routed...

    Seat assignment questions

You would know your territory better than I. But I've left our car for almost a month at Illinois stations as well as Ft. Madison and Mt. Pleasant, IA without any problem.

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

Will there still be no "legal" connection at DC between the NB Silver Star and WB Capitol Limited?

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

I rode Horizons on the Illinois Zephyr and Missouri service for many years (until replaced by Ventures). Just about every ride, I purchased a bike ticket. You never knew exactly where bikes would go, but they were always accommodated. This sounds like a case of bicycle derangement syndrome on...

    Capitol Limited discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Based on your reply, I've booked the CL and SS. Now if they change their mind by the time of my trip, I won't hold you responsible.:)
