    Public transport to Airports

Note that at present Amtrak does not stop at TF Green, only MBTA commuter trains. A big drawback to that service is that it doesn't run on weekends - trains only go as far as Providence. One could take the RIPTA Route 1 bus from the airport downtown, but that doesn't run very often on weekends...

    Public transport to Airports

Interesting. It appears that use of MHT and ORH as satellite airports for the Boston metro area never really took off (no pun intended). Doesn't help that both have poor or nonexistent transit connections, MHT particularly being in NH which has been unalterably opposed to any kind of...

Amtrak video: "We're Becoming a Transportation Powerhouse"

The main thing is they need to get some consistency - root out the bad apples, have more supervision so that the experience is more uniform across the network.

    Carrying a scanner might be a tip-off :)

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H2

Interesting. Generally lunch on 449 and dinner on 448 are served out of the cafe since the diner comes from/goes to NYP, but I had not heard of complimentary food out of the cafe before/after the Albany join/split.

    Amtrak and commuter railroads cross-honoring

The only time I experienced cross honoring was after the Amtrak 188 crash in May 2015, when NJT and SEPTA both cross honored Amtrak tickets to travel NYP - TRE then West Trenton to PHL, free shuttle bus between TRE and West Trenton. It was that way for about a week until the tracks at Shore were...

Spruce Goose the largest plane ever made

Not sure if it was actually the largest, or just the largest wooden plane ever made. Anyway it is an interesting story. A plane that was built for a need that was no longer there by the time it was finished, and which only ever had one short flight.

Perhaps the lower one is the senior fare?

Empire Builder Fargo, ND to Chicago

Before you leave home to go to the station, go to the Amtrak web site and select train status. Enter your train number (#8) and the station (Fargo) it should give you the estimated arrival time, in case it is running late you can adjust your leaving time accordingly. Another site you can use is...

    Amtrak Cascades Service discussion

I don't think we should be removing cars from the NEC at at a time when it is seeing record ridership and is one of the few Amtrak routes that is breaking even or better.

Recent Short Trip on NEC (Stamford to Portland)

Generally Concord runs separate buses to South Station and Logan Airport, except for a few runs early and late in the day where the bus serves both locations, serving the airport first then South Station.

Chicago-Detroit-Toronto service proposal with Amtrak/VIA connection in Windsor ON

The document doesn't say anything about work needed at the Michigan Central Station / Innovation Center. Currently there don't appear to be any platforms there. I'm not sure if there was any provision for Amtrak facilities in the station as part of the Ford renovation.

Chicago-Detroit-Toronto service proposal with Amtrak/VIA connection in Windsor ON

Also looking at OpenRailwayMap, I wonder if they plan to still make the Detroit stop, then reverse and use that wye track to access the line that leads to the tunnel. Otherwise the only stop in the Detroit area would be Dearborn, unless they were to activate the old Michigan Central station.

South Western Railway to be renationalised by Labour

Of course there are already several rail operations run by the government as Operator of Last Resort, such as LNER. The difference here is the government taking over franchises as they come up for renewal, rather than waiting for them to fail.

I rode the Northeast Corridor... In the UK!

Back in 2022 on a trip to Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay with my cousin, we drove back along the coast through Boston and I snapped this picture as we passed the station.

New Commuter Trains for Dublin Ireland

Iarnród Éireann unveils new DART trains to be in operation from 2026 This is a long overdue update of the DART system's rolling stock, many of which date back to the original opening in 1984 and are showing their age. In addition, the use of battery electric operation will allow the trains to...

    Houston - Galveston Shuttle Services

In the past we have used Galveston Limo to go from a post cruise hotel in Galveston to the airport (IAH) but they are not cheap. Although I imagine a trip to the Amtrak station might be cheaper as it is a shorter distance than IAH.

My USA trip 2024 (part 1)

In 2022 on a trip to the UK and Ireland we returned from Dublin to Boston and went through the pre check. I recall the line being extremely long but it did move and we had gotten to the airport in plenty of time for our flight so I wasn't worried. The only hitch came at our arrival in Boston...
