Is the CA high speed rail line supposed to run on electrified Caltrains tracks?

I don't see a problem with the volume of trains. Taipei Main Station handled four trains per hour each way from day one with two platforms, four tracks without problems. From what I have seen, and I could be wrong, is the station itself is undersized for any significant volume of people.

Is the CA high speed rail line supposed to run on electrified Caltrains tracks?

Yes, to tunnel, and it will be about a 25 mph segment due to curves. A more direct and higher speed route into Trans Bay was suggested by a couple people on the planning side, but it was firmly smacked down by the powers in charge. IMHO, the proposed terminal is grossly inadequate to handle...

Is the CA high speed rail line supposed to run on electrified Caltrains tracks?

The original thought was four tracks throughout with the middle two high speed and the outer two Caltrain and 100% grade separated. However, NIMBY's killed several of the grade separation proposals and a political promise by an absolute ignoramus in the HSR management that there would be no...

Suggestions needed for international rail trip

Taiwan, Taiwan: I could talk about it for hours. I called it home from 1990 to 2007, although there was a 3 year hole in the middle for me not working there, but my family remained there. First 5 years on the Taipei MRT, the last 9 years on the Taiwan HSR, from line on a map to riding the...

Suggestions needed for international rail trip

My inclination would be Japan. We did a week there in 2005. Fantastic!!! If you are not used to it, the mobs of people can be overwhelming, but they are very orderly. We had been in Taiwan for 15 years by that time, so masses of people and customs were not that difficult to deal with, and I...

Non-existent trackage on NARP/RPA's Vision Map?

This is far from the only imaginary line on these maps. One in my neck of the woods that comes to mind is a Nashville to Memphis line. The currently available track is significantly longer than the I-40 route and misses the only intermediate city of any size, Jackson TN. There was a direct...

Ideas for future trains between Florida and Midwest

Second Installment on the "Fast Three" First a couple of comments: Although the Dixieland had the shortest route and matched the City of Miami in time, it appeared to have the lowest passenger counts and was the first to die. The City of Miami lasted until Amtrak, and also appeared to have...

Ideas for future trains between Florida and Midwest

This is a start on discussion on the historic Chicago to Florida trains. Much of the timetable specific information comes from a copy I have of the November 1956 Official Railway Guide. This has always been one of my interests so I can go on about this for a while. First a little history...

Ideas for future trains between Florida and Midwest

No problem. my home turf. Both these more or less parallel lines are fairly heavily used. It actually would not have surprised me if someone had proposed using the NS Chatty to Atl. I could see some politician in Rome GA saying, hey, we need to train to come through here. Oh, by the way, my...

Ideas for future trains between Florida and Midwest

Sure you don't mean CSX? True. both CSX and NS have lines between Chattanooga and Atlanta, but if you are coming from Nashville, you will be on CSX. Also, the CSX line is both shorter and faster than the NS route, though both are far from I-75 in both length and reasonable time. This segment...

Dallas Union Station (Terminal) present, past and future

Hmmm. Not sure what is going on here, but the W&A became part of the NC&St.L which in turn was absorbed by the L&N. By the way, so far as I know, the W&A line, now the CSX line Atlanta to Chattanooga is owned by the state of Georgia and operated by NC&StL and followers on a long term lease.

Discussion of building rail and roads through populated areas

I could have been wrong on my timeline. However, getting anything from concept to construction in the DC area in 10 years would be light speed. Construction on the "East Coach Yard" for Washington Union Station was well under way in early 1972 which is when I went to work for their contractor...

Dallas Union Station (Terminal) present, past and future

My error. Working from a 52 year old memory. Track 7 was in the brain, but it was the westernmost platform track not removed.

Discussion of building rail and roads through populated areas

Metro did not get started because the freeway got stopped. Metro was already in the plan. There was also major opposition to the metro from the beginning. Generally it could be summed up with three points, and I have heard these with almost every rapid transit project in which I have been...

Dallas Union Station (Terminal) present, past and future

Washington Union Station is not a two level station in the sense that Grand Central is. The throat tracks are all on one level. The tracks that stub end are flat to having a small rising grade southbound. The tracks that are through are on the east side and more or less parallel to the stub...

Dallas Union Station (Terminal) present, past and future

I suspect this article is in error concerning the 7 tracks - 4 platform tracks. The map I referenced that showed 10 platform tracks, plus the three bypass tracks is a reproduction of the 1917 Valuation Map, which was required by the Interstate Commerce Commission, I suspect as part of the...

    Adirondack discussion

Aaargh!! Another solution to a non-problem that creates a real problem. I seriously doubt the difference in noise would even be measurable, but if so there are other methods of reducing the noise. As to the salt effecting the life of rails, etc, yes it will. This sort of stuff is why...

Dallas Union Station (Terminal) present, past and future

https://texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metapth1196976/m1/1/zoom/?resolution=3&lat=4600.5&lon=8460.5 Gives me a rather fuzzy map dated June 1917 that shows 10 platform tracks, with number 1 immediately adjacent to the building, some space beyond the outermost platform track, then 3 freight...

Passenger train service to Phoenix AZ.

A lot of these planners and media types ignorance of geography gives me screaming fits: "It's unclear if the reroute would replace Maricopa or merely add Phoenix." LOOK AT A MAP, PLEASE. It is either/or. Geography does not permit both.

I would LOVE to hear the logic behind this one.
