That is kind of interesting. It is a behind the scenes look at Amtrak's dining car operations. Did not notice huge changes or cutbacs, just standarization. BBQ rib sandwich looks good. Wish that was being served on 391 today on my trip to see the Bears game.

The Lounge menu doesn't look half bad. I thought the White Burgers were taken off the menu, also when did Amtrak start selling cigarettes (not that I would smoke them). The only thing that doesn't seem to appitizing on the Dining Car mennu is that Turkey Club with berry bread and swiss cheese. But they've got New Engalnd Clam Chowder mmmmmmmmmmm.

Ok, I won't be travelling till March on the Silver Meteor. I never tried the New York Strip on the Train, because "We left the Station too late" both times, so I had to settle for the Prime Rib.

Now announcing a new Amtrak Dining Car and Lounge menu starting October 1. Click here for full list of items. :D
Awww man, just got off the Sunset Limited and missed the filet mignon....hehe

My husband keeps teasing that Amtrak will not be anything on 10-1. Ugh...

reading that article, im glad they'll dump the expresses...they DO cause lateness!

I guess I'm glad that I had the New York Strip last time I took the Empire Builder. I'm sure the Filet Mignon will be good, but boy was the NY Strip good with the wine and mushroom sauce. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Hmmm...do I have time for an overnight trip on the Builder before Oct. 1? :)

By the way, Steve, the BBQ rib sandwich is pretty good, for a heat-and-eat sandwich. Amtrak's had it on the Empire Builder (and I presume other LD trains) for a couple of years now.

I think all other Lounge food is good except for the crap the serve in a Acela Regional cafe (nuked bagels, oily coffee, over micorwaved hamburgers, and frozen chicken sandwiches) yuk. ;)

The Silver Service Lounge does have some good snacks, like those apple cinnamon danishes, or that pizza, or even the burgers. The coffee in the lounge isn't bad either. I miss the postcards, as (as souveniers  ). B)

In the link I gave it shows that post cards are to be sold along with playing cards and blankets. One thing that I like about those LD Lounges are the white caste burgers mmmmmmmmmmmmmm (100% better than on AR). ^_^

Yeah, but every time I ask they say they're discontinued. :(

Maybe Battalion, or Miami Joe can tell if this is true. The White Castle burgers are good. :)

Viewliner, the other reason you might not have had the White Castles on the Meteor/Star was because that was before the National Diner/Lounge menu went into effect. :) I'm still in search of these excellent chocolate chip cookies everyone keeps talking about. WHERE ARE THEY!!!

A good and important question B)

I don't care if I find the cookies on the train or not. Just give me the brand name and I'll go a searchin'.
Can't do that, sorry. :(

They came individually wrapped in a clear plastic wrapper, with no markings or name brand whatsoever. So I have no idea where Amtrak got them from. :(

I wish that I could find them, they were absolutely fabulous and I'm not even a big chocolate fan. I rarely eat a candy bar, but I would hoard those cookies when I got on board. I'd even borrow some from the other sleeper car on occasions.

Yes, they added Chicken Pot Pie and New England Clam Chowder to the menu along with the other 4 items. Note though, the vegitarian dish is the same for both lunch and dinner.

Without fail, everytime I get on the Capitol the first thing I do after depositing my things on the seat is go to the lounge and get a cheese pretzel and a root beer. If it's a morning train I get coffee and a Sara Lee muffin or danish...now I'm hungry.
