Ah, yes! I remember that wonderful time when some manufacturer's actively competed for Amtrak's business...the Swedish 'X2000' versus the German 'ICE' trains...

Just as in earlier times when the Swedish electric locomotive won out over the French design, leading to the AEM7's....More recently GE over GM diesel-electric's.

Too bad there are not more American manufacturer's Amtrak can select from for new rolling stock today...

I was thinking last night that at Philly isn't there smaller boards at each stair? Are these smaller flip type boards?

I too would like to see the "inner workings" of the Solari. It may just be a simple console, or even a program on a terminal, but it'd be nice to see.

Gathering option for Philly? I'd much rather see behind the scenes stuff, than ride local transit.............
That would be significantly awesome.

I also find it amusing that google gives us an ad with a pseudo-solari in this thread:

"The Mayflower"? Wow that's a beautiful train name. How was it different from other Boston-Washington trains?
It wasn't.
Agreed.

Back a few years, Most of the thru trains on the NEC had distinctive individual names rather than 'Regional'. Such names were mostly Pennsy and New Haven heritage names for the most part with names appropriate to the area. Some examples...Congressional, Senator, Colonial, Federal, Edison, Representative, Betsy Ross, Benjamin Franklin, Merchant's Limited, Murray Hill, Nathan Hale, Bay State, Gilt Edge, Bankers, etc.

You can go to the Timetable Museum and find these and a lot more...... :)

While at PHL on NTD, I took a pictures of one of the small Solari Boards that is located on the top of the stairs. It looks like at one time, it may have listed some of the trains stops.

I wasn't able to find any pictures of these on-line. I was trying to watch and see if these made a noise when they changed but I kept missing it. Oh well, here is the picture.

They do. But you have to be right next to it to hear it. This photo shows the Crescent. When a Regional or AE comes in the "to" line is filled.
