Auto Train Coach Seat Assignments

Can anyone fill me in on how the auto train coach seat assignments are done? Is this done when we check in or is this done on the platform as we’re about to board the train or is this done in advance?
If we wanna make sure we sit together, do we have to get there extra early to request that?

When you check in they assign the coach seating. There has never been a problem getting a seat together. When you get on the train look around after all the passengers have boarded for an empty seat. You want your own seat to sleep at night more room to stretch out.
