We are taking SWC to Abq and husband is bringing a telescope. Would like to rent car in or very close to station. Eta is 4pm approximately. Thank you.

I'm sure there is a rental agency that will either pick you up or rent you a car right out of the station. I rented a car from La Junta, once. I had a family function in Colorado Springs. We ended up arriving at La Junta, CO 26 hours after we were supposed to arrive in Denver, CO. We used Hertz.

We were insanely late. They did everything they could to help us. It was a mom and pop run franchise- they ran our card over the phone, pa picked us up in the car we rented- was waiting for the train- we got to the agency, Ma ran out with the rental agreement, we signed it on the hood of the car, and off we went.

Might try Enterprise to see if they would pick you up at the station.

Have rented from Hertz in ABQ before. They reimbursed us the cab fare for the relatively short (10 minutes) cab ride from the train station to the airport.

Of course there is also local bus service from the transit center next door to the airport as well...... cheap, relatively easy...... unless you have extra luggage as it sounds like you will.

I've done several times using city bus number 50. It doesn't have luggage rack but the passenger load is light. Fare is $1. Also it has dedicated express bus for "RailRunner riders" and the fare is free. You'll need to check ABQ metro website since I'm on vacation.

We just returned from a trip to ABQ and used Enterprise, which is our favorite rental company. They picked us up and returned us to the station. I believe they stay open during the week until 6pm and are open on Saturdays as well. Not sure about Sunday. The Enterprise office is just a few blocks from ABQ and convenient near the Interstate exit as well.

There is an Enterprise on Lomas, just shy of one mile from the station. Their phone number is (505) 842-8611, and their hours are:

Monday - Friday: 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM
Saturday: 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Sunday: 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Additionally, the Hertz at the ABQ airport will bring a vehicle to the train station (pickup is from 10:30 - 5:00 every day, including weekends). They'll also reimburse cab fare from the train station to the airport, up to $15. The number is (505) 842-4235.

My brother-in-law had a bad experience with Budget in Albuquerque a few years ago.

I have usually liked Enterprise, and they do pick you up, but I have not personally rented out of ABQ before.

Be sure your hours and days that you need to do business with them are compatible with their hours of operation.

I haven't used Budget since the second time they swore up down and sideways that I'd get a 16' diesel box with a lift gate at dock height and they shoved me into a Ford E350 box with out lift gate below dock height. And both trucks leaked.

If you happen to want a truck, I recommend Penske very strongly. You won't get stuck with a gas truck since they don't offer them. And they guarentee they don't leak.

As for cars, as I said, Hertz. They cost more, sure, but you get what you pay for. Budget vehicles are generally unclean, beat up, and the company messes with you to the end of the earth.

I rented a car from the Enterprise at 120 Lomas Blvd (apparently two Enterprises on Lomas Blvd), and found it a very easy walk. 0.8 miles, according to Google Maps. I understand you can call for a pickup, but I figured walking would be quicker than waiting for the pickup (though I had no telescope in tow, so YMMV). I was perfectly happy with my car (Ford Focus, I think it was), and I was about 30 minutes late returning it and about 5 miles over my permitted amount, and nothing was said about either point.
