What is your budget? Hotels within four blocks of the station range from $150-400.

That question has been asked before. I would provide the answer if I knew it, and I suspect you can search at least as well as I can.

One reason that I don't know the answer is that I have found Chicago cabs to be reasonably priced, so I search for a hotel within a mile or two and take a cab. I have stayed at the Homewood Suites (the old one, which I believe is the closest Homewood Suites to the station) several times, and the cab fare has been under $8 before tip.

The Club Quarters Central Loop is a nice place to stay. About 4(?) blocks to the station. I believe it is in your budget.

I don't know when you plan to travel, so I just pulled up 12-15-2015 for the Palmer House - a top notch hotel and it's $109 for 2 doubles for a night! Normally this joint is much more expensive, so your dates of travel may have an adverse effect on the rates. I may have to make an overnight to CHI on this date, it really is a great hotel.

I have stayed at the Palmer House. It is an impressive building and may be a good deal, but I was not too overwhelmed with the rooms. The lobby is certainly worth a visit.

Physically closest is the Holiday Inn. The walk is obnoxious due to missing and poor-condition sidewalks, but it's the shortest walk.

I use the W about two blocks from the hotel. The Marriott is one block further. And then the Palmer house slightly further down. I've also stayed there.

^ Spot on about those three hotels. All walkable from Union Station--depending on luggage, of course. But not your father's station hotel.

There are also some motels in the vicinity--I would check google maps. Not as nice as the above three, which are all super.

Palmer House is a nice stay in a classic hotel. Cab fares in Chicago are quite reasonable.

I'm at the Palmer House right now. It is a classic hotel

and worth whatever you pay. It is a $6 cab ride from/to CUS.

I used to stay at the Palmer House but the W is closer as the Marriott too. Not by much but a couple blocks closer to the station so I can walk it.

Sorry. Didn't see that I had already replied to this post previously. Thought it was a new one.

Another vote for Club Quarters here. I liked the refillable water bottles and the closet full of extra blankets, pillows, etc. Plus, the bed was comfortable, and I didn't hear any city noise. (Not that it bothers me, but I know it bothers other people.)

You really can't go wrong with the Palmer House, and the common areas are downright gorgeous, but it tends to be a bit more expensive than Club Quarters. I'd book that if you want a bit of a treat.

On the other hand, those Hilton properties can be gotten at a steal around certain times of the year. I've seen the Palmer House go for about $70/night during slow weekends.

Don't forget airbnb. Some really nice condo units in the vicinity of Union Station can be had at a reasonable cost.
