Thanks for allowing me to be part of this community. I come from a several generational family of RR’ers. My Gf was a hostler at a small yard of the Delaware and Hudson RR. My dad, and 2 uncles were engineers on the D&H RR, and several other relatives had positions including brakeman, car knocker, conductor, and clerk.

Welcome, Cuzzant! Your grandfather may even have been one of the early beneficiaries of the railroad retirement program, which is distinct from (yet kinda sorta integrated with) Social Security, both enacted in the 1930s: Research: An Overview of the Railroad Retirement Program

He needed to have his birth certificate changed in Italy so that he could collect his retirement. I have the letter he wrote to his sister in Italy, requesting her to ask the parish priest to amend his BC to show his Americanized last name. I’m not sure if he collected RR retirement or a pension from the RR he worked for.
