Living just minutes from the southern end of Lake Michigan, I am within earshot of many train lines. Heck growing up we were a half mile north of one set and a quarter mile south from another. Love the sound of the train at night. I'm planning on convincing Indiana state and local authorities that Chesterton IN should have an Amtrak platform stop.
My inaugural Amtrak trip was in 2011 on the Zephyr with my husband and two pre-teen kids. Everything that could go wrong did, and we were 13+ hours late into our destination.
I started taking Amtrak again about 3 years ago and now travel about every 4-5 months on the train. I love it. I usually get a roomette, so that's nice. I travel for pleasure or to visit relatives (Newport News and Raleigh).
Next scheduled trip is the California Zephyr (again). Hopefully there will not be so many hiccups as the first time. Hubby and I booked a roomette each on opposite sides of the car so that (1) we can have views out of both sides if the Sightseer car is full and (2) not argue about who has to sleep in the upper bunk!!
