we will be coming into washington dc union station for a 4 night stay in september. any recommended hotels within walking distance? thanks
For NTD in WAS Several of Us Stayed @ the Phoenix Park Hotel! It's across from the Post Office Museum (and Brew Pub! ) next to Union Station, only One Block from the Station!

It's an Older Rehabbed Hotel that's listed in Unique Hotels of America, I found a Room for $99 on Line which Isn't Bad for a WAS Hotel this Nice and Convienent! EZ Access to Everything, Google it UP and Check it out, Kayak.com works Great!

I stayed at the Holiday Inn on the Hill a few years back. This hotel has been completely renovated and definitely does not feel like what most of us think of when we think of Holiday Inn. Its a short walk from Union Station, and very very close to the Capitol (as one would expect based on its name). I believe there's also a Hyatt right across the street.

After Jim posted about the PPH, I changed my NTD reservation to the PPH. I highly recommend it. My only complaint was the early morning brakfast staff, I think they may not have been completely awake :)

The Phoenix Park is a member of the Historic Hotels of America; I've reserved a room at quite a few of their properties, and have always enjoyed the stay.

That hotel is now called The Liaison Capitol Hill. It is no longer a part of the Holiday Inn chain.

Thanks for the suggestion regarding staying at the Phoenix Park Hotel! :hi: My husband and I will be taking the Silver Star from Tampa to Washington DC ~ arriving in Washington on Thanksgiving Day afternoon and then flying home on Sunday ~ just for the fun of it. I had originally booked a very nice hotel in the Dupont Circle area ~ Hotel Palomar ~ but then decided to do some investigation of the Phoenix Park. Hotel Palomar is MUCH further away from Union Station and was a bit pricier -_- Obviously, the Phoenix Park is in a GREAT location, and has LOADS of highly favorable reviews on TripAdvisor. I was able to get a terrific rate ~ $129/night + tax during that time (when all the Washington folks have gone home for the holiday). There are lots of very good places to eat in the neighborhood, the Washington Old Town Trolley makes a stop at Union Station, and we'll be able to grab the Metro from there to get out to Reagan National Airport for our trip home.

Union Station won't be all that busy on Thanksgiving afternoon. The morning might see a bit of a rush, but Thursday overall is pretty quiet. And there will be no commuter services running either, only Amtrak.

I did a trip several years ago on an Acela out of DC on turkey day and things weren't busy at all.

Visit on Wednesday or Sunday and the place will be packed!

I stayed at the Hotel George in 2008 and it was really nice. It's at 15 E Street, about a five minute walk from the station.
