We are thinking of taking the train from ABQ to Las Vegas, NV for the Thanksgiving holiday. We would leave ABQ on the 21st at around 4:40 and get into Kingman, AZ at 12:35am. From there it looks like a bus takes you on to McCarran Airport arriving at 3:10am. Have any of you done this? Can you get a taxi to take you from the airport to your hotel (downtown) that time of the morning? Anybody had this experience please write up! Thanks! :)

I took a trip to Las Vegas from Chicago. The train was late getting into Kingman, but there were two vans waiting to take passengers to LasVegas. The vans stop for a 15 minute rest break about half way to LasVegas. Getting a cab at the airport in LasVegas was no problem at all.

On the return trip, meeting up with the van at the airport to go back to Kingman, it's in a lower level area and the place the van meets you is not well marked. However, there's a police officer riding a bike and he'll tell you where to wait. I was really early getting there, so the van wasn't there yet. When the van did arrive, he parked there and put a sign on the top of the van that says "Amtrak". Also, if you are taking a cab to the airport, the cab driver more than likely knows where the van is. My brother-in-law drove me and he was clueless.

Unless it has improved since last October, the waiting area in Kingman to catch the train home is a sight to behold. It's in a very old storefront about a half a block from the tracks. There's a tin ceiling and a bathroom from the 1940's. The train crew is in the storefront next to the passengers and they'll come in and tell you when the train is arriving.

Getting a cab at the airport, ANY time of day or night, is no problem. When I lived there, I often arrived into the airport at weird hours, and never had a problem finding one....Just follow the signs in the airport to the taxi waiting area, and someone should be able to direct you to them. I believe the cabs are out the east side of the terminal, but, they've remodeled it over the past year or so, and I can't remember, but, the signs will direct you. I will actually be in Vegas next week, so, if anything major has changed, I'll post here again and let you know....

If you haven't done so already, get your hotel reservations made. You'll certainly be able to find a room, but, it might not be your first choice, as Vegas really fills up over the holidays. When I lived there, I couldn't wait to get OUT of town for the holidays, while it seemed like everyone else couldn't wait to come INTO town.....go figure!

Have a great trip!
