An engineer posted on Facebook that "the railroad is a mess" (apparently due to a snowstorm). The train arrived SEA at 9:09 am, 10 hr 39 mins late.

The train went into service disruption status last night, somewhere between Vancouver WA and Kelso. I haven't heard any further details.

Yeah, it would be interesting to hear what happened. Yesterday was a rough day in OR/WA with snow and ice in areas that don't normally get it.

Looks like 14 took a big hit between KEL and OLW, eventually arriving SEA over 5 hours late at 1:27 a.m.

And 507 took a big hit in the same area, eventually arriving in EUG at 2:30 a.m., nearly 6 hours late.

That said, I kind of think that if 508's passengers had spent the entire night on the train, I think we would have heard about it. All it would take is a few disgruntled passengers posting photos on social media, and I'm sure that would reach the news media, etc, which love a good story about miserable passengers on trains/planes etc.

Maybe the passengers were all members of AU belonging to the "10 hour delay is an adventure and I enjoy it" club :giggle:

Frozen switches. I suppose the PacNW just doesn't get freezing weather often enough for it to be worth installing switch heaters.

Spent my childhood in Tacoma, and from what I hear from old classmates in that area, western WA typically still get a combination of slushy snow and freezing sleet. Sounds like there was an overabundance this year so far.

The Richmond Spider offense was in service disruption at Eastern Washington Univ yesterday.
   Go Eagles!! Put Youngstown State's offense in service disruption next Saturday too!!!
I went to James Madison and will be heading to Fargo, ND to watch them play NDSU. Flying unfortunately. Hope to see JMU v EWU in the national championship game. Nice to see there are other FCS fans in the AU world.

I am an Eastern alum. I prefer to listen to their game from the warmth of my living room than head up the road to Cheney and sit outside in temperatures that are predicted to be in the low single digits. I'm not THAT big a fan. :p

Sometimes the switch heaters actually cause more problems. They thaw the snow and it refreezes over and over until the heaters can't can't keep up. this is exacerbated when the switches are thrown, moving the slushy snow and ice. Eventually, the hearters short out or you have a block of ice too big for the switch points to handle.

That's why even though there are switch heaters on a lot of eastern routes, the route is still locked and lined for a specific route to reduce the chances of lost indication or correspondence.
