No, this isn't about trains, but relates to previous posts.
Please don't equate taking a prescribed painkiller exactly as written for a bonafide medical condition to smoking pot to get high, or to any other abuse of drugs. It's inconsiderate to those who have medical conditions who truly need such drugs, as well as to their loved ones. They are not using them for recreation, and certainly do not and would not choose to have to have them. I don't even take Tylenol, but I'm blessed with much better health than many people are.

My husband had many medical issues, and at times he would have been in excruciating, unbearable pain without his medication. (And he was no wimp!) He asked his doctor one time why he heard so much about this drug on the news and that he didn't understand it. The doctor replied that it was because he took it exactly as prescribed and did not abuse it. Pain specialists had tried everything from electric gizmos on down. These powerful drugs are a blessing for some, and admittedly a curse for others. But don't lump them all together.

I know no one meant any offense, but these are two totally separate things that have only the word "drug" in common.

Consider this the "Sermonette of the Day." :)

Edit to add: Love the dhmo link. Hubby occasionally required IV administration of prescriptions containing a high percentage of this substance. Only an RN was allowed to do this, as not just any health care professional is qualified to perform that precedure.
I meant no offense at all. I was simply pointing out that people get all up in arms over marijuana (which has MANY medicinal uses), and I don't understand why since its side effects are much milder than many of the prescription drugs we are given. It is also not addictive like other painkillers. I'm glad more states are approving it for medical use.

For a better example, I could say I don't understand why it's illegal when alcohol isn't. People don't seem to have an issue when a bunch of people go to the bar, a party, a wedding and get drunk to the point of falling down and vomiting, but use a little marijuana so you feel relaxed and ready to sleep, and you're a horrible person. Say what? I don't see the difference between smoking a joint and having a glass of brandy as a nightcap. Heck, NyQuil is stronger. :p

I think it all depends on the individual regarding their tolerance for cannabis. I smoked a little back in the 60's and 70's and never enjoyed the effect. I became uncomfortably wasted, paranoid and know for a fact that my driving was severely impaired. I've heard that the current levels of THC are much higher than back then, and I don't go near any kinds of drugs or alcohol these days unless prescribed. In other words, if you can smoke and/or drink socially, more power to you. I just know that I can't. BTW...most brandies are 40% alcohol and NyQuil is 25%. I apologize for being off the original topic again.

None taken, Sorcha! I always enjoy your posts. I just felt it was important to make that distinction, because I know there is, unfortunately, a LOT of abuse of these painkillers.

I am probably the only person in the US who never watched Survivor or any of the OJ trial, and has never smoked even one cigarette (parents smoked and lamented about being addicted), much less pot. I've never even seen any, except when the drug ed people come to school! So I am not knowledgeable enough to have an opinion on whether it is harmless or not. I have not bothered to research it because it has never, to my knowledge, affected my life in any way, and I'm not even curious about it. I do have a margarita, beer, or glass of wine occasionally, maybe six times a year? Yeah, my friends and I are not much fun. ;)

From what I've observed, whether a substance has caused problems in a person's or a loved one's life greatly influences his or her position on it. Those with alcoholic family members would have a totally different view of my margaritas than mine, I guess.

I have never watched any of those shows, actually no tv at all. And I haven't smoked cigarettes in decades.

#3 I'll leave blank...

AND -- this tread has got to totally away from the advertised heading -- if anyone wants lets start an other one -- just like the other one -- "don't Bogart -- " maybe not even an Amtrak thread. Maybe on another forum.
Nah, that's the beauty of this place (and why I've stuck around for so long) - the mods have a great handle on when to let a thread wander and when to crack down.
If you'd prefer a heavily modded forum where power hungry authoritative moderators ensure strict compliance to seemingly arbitrary distinctions between threads/forums and an ironclad focus on whatever the OP wanted to discuss, the railroad.net forums might be a better fit.

TOTALLY AGREE -- !!

This is one of the best-modded forums I've ever come across, and for my money - extremely useful about train travel and all --

Mostly sincere and honest people here.

Love the place.

This.

We have to have fun in a thread once in a while, that is how we get to know each other on more than one level. :D If you really want to have some fun, join the Sunday night chat session, that is a true blast.

Or Hydrogen dioxide instead of water?
It is Dihydrogen Oxide or Oxygen dihydride.
Because its H2O it is Dihydrogen Oxide If it were Oxygen Dihydride it would be OH2
It's dihydrogen monoxide.

Apologies for the off topic thread revival, but this was too funny not to share:

Florida country radio morning-show hosts Val St. John and Scott Fish are currently serving indefinite suspensions and possibly worse over a successful April Fools' Day prank. They told their listeners that "dihydrogen monoxide" was coming out of the taps throughout the Fort Myers area. Dihydrogen monoxide is water.

I think it's ridiculous that they were suspended because of this. Wonder if their boss fell for the hoax and is now taking it out on them.

They're actually facing FELONY charges?!?

Let's see. The listeners put too much faith in what they hear on the radio & TV AND they're unaware of what the date is. Hmm. I think the listeners need to go to "common sense school".

They're actually facing FELONY charges?!?
That's the part I can't quite wrap my head around.
I guess it depends on what else they said besides DHMO was coming out of the taps. If they implied that it was dangerous stuff, then maybe there is a cause. Maybe they should charge all the people who called the water utility company for not knowing or at least not looking up what DHMO was before calling with their concerns.
Can't say that I would have recognized it as H20 by it's chemical name at first, but probably would have researched it before calling. And again, it was April 1st.

I'm all for fun, but OTOH I can imagine moms with young children being panicked by such an announcement. I think radio shows should think through the possible consequences of their pranks a little more thoroughly before doing them. A nurse in England committed suicide over a hoax call to her hospital, I believe when the Duchess Kate was a patient there. Thinking a dangerous chemical was in the water you just gave to your baby isn't too funny at the time. "Just sayin'," as they say.

That said, a felony charge seems a bit extreme, unless someone was actually seriously harmed by it.

DHMO has caused some serious problems, however. It resulted in numerous cancellations and delays on The Empire Builder a couple of years ago, IIRC. I don't recall if those issues resulted in anyone being led off the train in handcuffs however.

I believe another kind of DHMO excess at least indirectly led to service disruptions on The Coast Starlight a while back too. I'm not sure if those disruptions led to any arrests.

Whenever I have an excess of DHMO and want to get rid of it discreetly, I usually flush it down the toilet (but don't tell anyone--shh!).

That's it, buster. I'm calling the EPA on you and your DHMO polluting ways.
