Last year at Niagara Falls VIA, CBSA lined us all up and had a drug dog sniff our baggage. This past week, when I passed through Nagara Falls, NY, the dog sniffed around my bags when I was talking to the CBP agent. The CBP agent barely looked at my passport, asked me about the food and alcohol I was bringing over, and basically lost interest when he saw that the cheese and pepperoni sticks were Canadian products. The dog, on the other hand, seemed more interested in the cheese and pepperoni sticks than he was about potential controlled substances.

During my crossing into Canada on the Adirondack, there didn't appear to be any dogs involved. In fact, the CBSA agent didn't ask me any questions about what I was bringing, rather, she wanted to know why I was entering Canada and where I was staying. She seemed to lose interest in me when I told her I was staying in a hotel.
