Are the Long Island trains going to be extensions of existing Amtrak trains? Northeast Regional, Empire Service, or what? Eliminating the need to change at Penn Station for some Amtrak trips by Long Island residents.

If not, I'm not sure I see the point of another rail operator on Long Island running express (relative to the LIRR trains) from Penn Station.

For the relative handful of passengers that would benefit from a potential “one seat ride”, I also can’t see the trouble and expense of what it would take for Amtrak to extend to Long Island.🤷‍♂️

The Long Island trains will be extended Northeast Regional trains to/from Washington.
So unless these trains are ones that currently terminate in New York, this would mean less service to New England. Does Amtrak think that there are more passengers that want a one seat ride to LI than there are passengers now inconvenienced with less service to New England?

Another consideration for the “one seat ride”, is the complexity of the Long Island RR route structure…which route or routes will get the trains? Which one would have the most significant number of passengers to benefit?

Some current NEC Regionals originate in Virginia. Would Amtrak have servicing facilities on LI for those trains?
Would Amtrak have its own crews operating on LI, or use LIRR T&E crews?

So many complications.
The way I see it, the ones that would benefit the most from all this, might be the lawyers representing each side, with the huge volume of work involved to implement it.

I say, keep the current setup, with passengers changing at NYP. Spend resources on more beneficial endeavors.

Not every Northest Regional continues through to Boston. Many now terminate in New York. The Boston service is certainly better than it was in 1971, when there were only 4 through trains between Boston and Washington. Besides, it's possible they plan to run more Northest Regional trains overall.
