Is there a safe place to park near the New Orleans station? Preferably inexpensive. This would be for 4 days.

There's a parking garage at 1301 Girod Street, next to the Post Office, about three blocks from the station. The charge is $20/day which probably is more than you were looking for, but the garage is fully enclosed, gated, and staffed which is a big plus. There is an open parking lot right next to the station that advertises "Amtrak Parking", but I was advised by the Post Office private parking lot attendent that the station lot is not staffed after dark, and has a very bad record for break-ins and stolen cars.

There is also a parking garage about two blocks from the station on Howard St. Don't know about the price though.
Another possibility would be to park anywhere within reason, but safe and cheap, and then take a taxi to the station. Any parking suggestions for that option?

One other factor is an early morning departure on the Crescent, so the parking lot/garage will have to be one that opens fairly early.

We parked at the lot next to the Bus Station/Amtrak for two weeks without any problems, when we took NOL to Chicago and the Empire Builder and back again. I went to Google Maps to scope out the parking lot and noticed where the street lights were located on the lot. I parked right under one within sight of the taxi stand. The rates were reasonable and you pay self service on the lot.

Thanks! That would be the simplest way to go. My concern had been the stories about crime in the general Superdome area. Nothing would spoil a trip worse than coming back to find your car stolen.
