According to the latest This Week at Amtrak, it looks like Monday night at 11:59 is the deadline to reach an agreement between three of the major railroad unions.

So, if you are planning on travelling next Monday, be prepared for an alternative plan. Otherwise, not a good week to go train watching!

I so hope this does NOT happen. Or that if it does it will be resolved before next Friday, as I'm leaving on a LONG awaited trip that night.

Just for the 'halibut', I looked at the Greyhound fare, round trip ABQ ~ SAN, in case I can't do it on the train.

Their price, round trip is $414! I bought my Amtrak ticket this past Spring @ $120 roundtrip.

Correction: I redid the numbers and the correct fare is half what I quoted for Greyhound. It's $204 ... still more than my Amtrak fare.

:help: Does anyone "in the know" think there is any chance a strike will actually happen, and if it does, would it last more than just hours before Congress/the President stepped in? Obviously I don't want my trip starting next Friday night to get scuttled, but on a less-selfish level, the last thing the economy needs is held up shipment screwing with what seems to actually be a recovering (relatively) Christmas shopping season this year. And this, mind you, does come from one who is pro-Union in most instances. To me the sensible thing to do would be to give them another "cooling off" period as was done in October. At least that way if a strike does come, it won't be right at one of the busy rail (both freight and passenger) times of year.

Well, cue the hallelujah chorus:

Edit: The strike has been averted, per AP story in link above!
