Planning a early 2015 trip on the TE from CHI to Maricopa AZ. What train number or sleeper car number would I want to reserve / request so there would be no sleeper car change in San Antonio? Thanks in advance for the assistance.

You want to book Train #421 which is the thru Sleeper that runs from Chicago to San Antonio, then is switched to the back ( along with the #421 Coach) of Train #1 that runs from New Orleans to LA 3 days a week!
Do NOT Book #21/#1 or you will have to get off the Train in San Antonio, wait in the Station until #1 Arrives to board your Sleeper!

It's pretty intuitive. If, when you are reserving your sleeper, it shows any sort of connection in San Antonio, DON'T BOOK IT. That is, unless of course, you want to hang out in San Antonio between 10 PM and 2 AM (and change rooms in the meantime).
Like Lakeshore and jimhudson (twice!) have mentioned, 421 is the train, and it only runs three days a week.
Book the wrong day, and you'll have much longer than a 4 hour layover in SAS.
