I've never needed extra things like duct tape, clips, ear plugs, drinks, etc. on my train trips. I think traveling lighter is easier, personal preference. If you use your small electronics a lot, the small power strip might be handy, although I've never brought one. But then I've never taken longer than one-night trips. Normally, sleeper passengers are provided ample meals and bottled water.

I've needed duct tape (door rattles & curtain not staying losed), but I only take a very small roll. I alsu bring a needle and thread (small amount) just incase I pop a button.

The duct tape wrapped around a pen doesn't add much weight. I was very glad to have it on the CZ when the air was blowing out of the vent like a tornado. It could also be handy for torn clothes and rattling doors. I also travel light and agree about the water, ear plugs, drinks, etc. I've never brought a power strip either, but all I use are a Nook and a cell phone.

For me wrapping duct tape around a pencil is too fussy. The small rolls are only a couple of inches across. You can stuff a hankerchief inside the tube so you are not waisting space. Does't weigh much either.

I carry duct tape to work--at an office job. Have I ever needed it there? Once or twice and was darn glad to have it. Someone else needed it once. "If I only had some duct tape." I do!

Maybe add a bud vase/flower for when you go to the diner? (RRDude reminded me that I was thinking about whether we should bring our own vase/flower). ;)

We had an all day meeting and everyone brought their laptops. I used flourescent colored duct tape to tape down the power cords so that no one tripped on them.

Hamster. Wrapped in duct tape. ;-)
That sounds like the new Amtrak Culinary Team Special.

I also like the duct tape wrapped around a pen. I bring a pen anyway, and a foot of duct tape wrapped around it adds literally no room or weight to my bag. It's a godsend if you're trying to sleep and your closet door won't stay shut.
A foot!

Brings to question How much Tape do I use in a year, and in my career? Hmnnnn?

We go through a lot. Kids occasionally make wallets or other things out of duct tape. I could go many years on one roll but we go through a couple per year.
