The additional cars might also be in reserve for future service expansion, with several longer corridors being promoted for reinstatement of passenger trains.

Maybe the Mexican government decided that this was a good opportunity to get good second hand equipment at a decent price and that it would be unwise to pass on the opportunity, even if they had no immediate demand.

I agree that Yucatan is itself too small to justify high value sleeper trains.

Agreed, but it’s brand new equipment they bought. That’s why is so bizarre. Completely different approach than Amtrak has taken with the ordering process. According to this press release sleepers and diners have already been delivered.

I understand, that is indeed mysterious and doesn't make much sense, unless these trains are being ordered on the back of the Maya order but will be used on other longer distance services.

I thought the earlier post referred to the collection of second hand European locomotives and equipment they have also acquired, including some British stuff.

Before shutting down most of the Passenger Rail in Mexico, ( the Copper Canyon Trains and the Tequila Express were the Exceptions and were Privatized)N de M used to purchase used Passenger Cars from all the world,.

For example,The Aztec Eagle had ex Mopac Eagle Cars pulled by Mexican assembled Locomotives. and the crack overnight Train El Chepe, from Mexico City to Guadalajara, used ex New York Central Cars.

Mexico has long range plans to reinstate Passenger Trains all over the country, ( Government owned), with the hub being Mexico City.

Checking with the Tren Maya website. it seems that the longest ride, Cancun - Palenque, is 11 hours. The current service is a day train, but the ride seems to be long enough to support an overnight run. I suspect that as the service matures, there will be an overnight train. Until there is, there's obviously no need to deploy sleeping cars.
