To be fair, it's not the same train on paper... One runs to and from from New York, the other to and from Boston. The fact that they are coupled together at Abany does not alter that from a computer / ticket viewpoint. If you want to use a rail pass to ride to or from Boston, as trimetbusfan says, just book through on 449, or book 49 for the New York option.

Yes it would be the same if you booked Portland OR to Chicago on 28 it would still be one segment even though 28 is combined with 8 at Spokane. As long as you booked it as a one segment trip.
