The advantage of not mixing, from a passenger POV is that you'd know what you're getting. As a solo, I don't need the space of a bedroom on the Florida trains. I would be happy in a roomette if I knew it would be a VI and I'd have my private toilet and not have to walk down the hall to a bathroom. But when I don't know which car they'll give me, I book a bedroom and try not to think about the cost.

So having only one type on a train versus both, has its pros and cons. You lose having a choice on a particular train, but you are more likely to know what you’re getting. And in a few cases, knowing that can influence which train or route you may choose.

Actually, I don't bother, and just take whatever room the computer dishes out. It has always worked for me so far.
Interesting. So you never try to change what you get? You would be happy with Roomette 10 on a Superliner, say, and not try to get one closer to the center? Or move from a “xx32” sleeper to a “xx30”, to minimalize the chance of losing your accommodation due to them cutting a car?🤔

Or, change an assigned business seat to a forward facing single, next to a window?🤷‍♂️

Or, choosing an accommodation most likely to be on what you value as “the more scenic side”?😉

OK, so I've occasionally changed my assigned business class/Acela seating, but if I'm stuck with a lousy seat and can't change it, I don't cancel my trip. Besides, you can do that online without having to deal with calling an agent and waiting forever on the phone. And for my sleeper trips, I've never had one given out y the computer that is so bad that I feel the need to call an agent to change it or cancel my trip. I suppose if they were ever able to change the app so that I could do it without calling an agent, I might do it if I think I needed it.

By the way, if we want Amtrak to succeed, it needs to increase ridership. And if ridership increases, the trains will be more full and it will be harder to score desirable seats or rooms. If we are riding the train for transportation utility, than we have to travel when we need to travel and take whatever is dished out, even if that means a less desirable seat or room.
