What a couple of weeks this has been. My wife and I left Michigan on the Bluewater on Sept. 5. We left Chicago on the westbound EB on September 6, and arrived in Seattle on Sept. 8. After a night in Seattle, we departed on train 510, Cascades, for Vancouver, BC. Then a week's long cruise to Alaska and back. We drove to Seattle on the 17th and caught the eastbound EB on the 18th, arriving in Chicago this evening. We were about 2 hours late getting into Chicago due to some electrical problems east of Minot. Tomorrow we catch the Bluewater back to Lansing. We rode business class when possible and had a bedroom both ways on the EB. Fantastic trip. After I unpack and catch my breath, I hope to post more of a trip report. In short, it was a great trip.

I just got back from a cruise myself. I too flew to Seattle to depart, and then flew back home on Sunday. If I had the extra vacation time, I would have taken the train instead. The morning my flight was supposed to depart (see 'supposed'), it was cancelled about 3 in the morning. I didn't find out until I arrived at the airport, but, they had automatically rebooked me (on another airline). However, that entitled me to the 'privilege' of additional security screening at the checkpoint, due to the fact that I am now on a one-way ticket. All in all, a grand adventure getting to Seattle. Next time, I'll be on the train! :D

Ah, the Empire Builder. I think it's my favorite train in the USA. Glad you had fun and looking forward to reading the trip report!
