Question 1:

Let's say I check a bag through to Toledo with the intention of taking the Ambus to Dearborn. We arrive in Toledo and the the bag is not there. We continue on to Dearborn and then on via car to another town. Would Amtrak get it to us at our destination when it is found? In the old days, airlines would put baggage on Greyhound to get it to the nearest town then taxi it out to you. what does Amtrak do?

Two possible results if Amtrak won't forward it to where we are. We won't be going back to Toledo so:

Question 2:

When the bag is found, will Amtrak forward it on to Chicago if we ask then hold it there for when we arrive? Will they forward it at their expense to other than a checked bag station?

Question 3:

If, strangely, they don't find it until we pass though Chicago and change to Albuquerque, would they forward it to that station?

Question 4:

Given that it is not found until we return home, do they forward it to our starting station? Our home?

When I went to LA several years ago one of my bags didn't make the it off the CZ and in fact didn't get discovered until the zephyr got all the way back to Chicago. Since I was only in LA for a couple more days when they discovered it, they just re-checked it on the zephyr to be taken off in LNK and my family picked it up from the station. Not sure what they would do if you aren't near a station!

Very similar to the old days you reference. Once we got off the westbound Empire Builder in Winona, MN (WIN) and one of our bags was still on the train. The Assistant Conductor went to the baggage car, found the bag; it had been mislaid in the pile for Williston, ND (WTN). He radioed back to the station about 10 minutes after departure with the plan - the bag was set off in St. Paul, put on the eastbound train in the morning, dropped off in Winona and the shuttle van that runs between Winona and my town (Rochester) delivered it to our door around noon the following day.

Pretty good service, in my opinion. It was just full of dirty clothes anyway. :)
