Seeing the post who travel the longest, figured be fun to see who has the most station within hour and half drive.

I have 4

LaCrosse (LSE) = About an hour and 15.

Winona (WIN) = About an hour

Red Wing (RDW) = About 45 min.

Minneapolis (MSP) = About an hour and half

(Soon to be St Paul Union, about an hour.)

Only Amtrak stations or any kind of passenger rail stations? If you include light-rail and commuter-rail stations, I counted I can reach probably 32 DART stations in under an hour and half of drive

The winner(s) would be someone living along the NE corridor.

Edit: I just checked, even I have access to 4 Amtrak stations within an hour and half of drive-

Dallas = about 30 min

Fort Worth = about 50 min

Gainesville, OK = 1 hour 20 min

Cleburne, TX = 1 hour 15 min

90 Minutes?

At a minimum (assuming no traffic):

LOR, Woodbridge, ALX, MSS, CLP, WAS, NCR, BWI, BAL, ABE, WIL, Newark (DE), PHL (?), Rockville, HFY.

Probably a few more.

Amtrak stations.

90 minutes in no major traffic issues.. Guess the only one could be an issue for me to MSP. Rest are easy driving.

If you include subway stations, umm... around 400 most likely (that's w/o traffic).

Purely Amtrak, around 10.

Amtrak Stations as defined by an Amtrak trains stops to board and let off passengers regularly. I have 12 within an hour and a half drive from my house using Google Maps:

Harrisburg 37 minutes

Middletown, 38 minutes

E-town 42 minutes - My prefered station

Lancaster 42 minutes - Second prefered if timing is tight

Baltimore 48 minutes - Third prefered if going south or north and don't want to change trains

BWI 1 hour, 10 minutes

Parksburg 1 hour 13 minutes

Coatsville 1 hour 17 minutes

Aberdeen 1 hour 18 minutes

Downingtown 1 hour 26 minutes

Lewistown 1 hour 29 minutes

Exton 1 hour 30 minutes

and a runner up that I think if I speed could still get there in an hour and a half:

Harpers Ferry, WV 1 hour 32 minutes - Thought about using this station but was always worried about parking.

13 stations on 3 different lines.

15! All times are generated by Google Maps, which I have found to be a good 15% too slow (so I could probably add more)

  1.
  2. CWH (31 min)
  3. PHN (34 min)
  4. TRE (36 min)
  5. ARD (38 min)
  6. PAO (38 min)
  7. PHL (43 min)
  8. EXT (45 min)
  9. PJC (51 min)
  10. DOW (52 min)
  11. COT (57 min)
  12. WIL (61 min)
  13. PAR (64 min)
  14. NBK (71 min)
  15. NRK (75 min)
  16. MET (79 min)

And, if I can have a 1 minute leeway:

  1.
  2. LNC (91 min)

Yeah!

I live on the NEC, and can only count 8 within 90 minutes (on a good day)!

  1. KIN (of course
    laugh.gif
    )
  2. WLY
  3. Mystic (I'm too lazy to look up the code
    mosking.gif
    )
  4. NLC
  5. PVD
  6. RTE
  7. BBY
  8. BOS

Maybe I can add OSB (if I can drive at 110 MPH in RI and 79 MPH in CT - like Amtrak does

)

My secondary station (LA), has a million.

Ventura (w/o traffic)

Oxnard

Camarillo

Moorpark

Simi Valley

Chatsworth

Van Nuys

Burbank - Bob Hope Airport

Glendale

Pomona

Ontario

Fullerton

Riverside

San Bernardino

Victorville (w/o traffic)

Anaheim

Orange ( I will count this since it has 1 daily departure on Amtrak)

Santa Ana

Irvine

Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo (same as Orange)

San Juan Capistrano

San Clemente Pier

Oceanside

Solana Beach (w/o traffic)

NYP, New Rochelle, Stamford, Bridgeport, New Haven, Yonkers, Croton-Harmon, Newark, Newark Airport, Metropark, New Brunswick, Princeton, and Trenton. With an extra 10 minutes added on, I can get to Cornwells Heights, PA; Wallingford, CT; and Poughkeepsie, NY.

From my home in Baton Rouge, LA:

Using Google Maps:

Hammond, LA (HMD) - 53 minutes

Lafayette, LA (LFT) - 1 hour 9 minutes

New Orleans, LA (NOL) - 1 hour 19 minutes

Schriever, LA (SCH) - 1 hour 29 minutes

Slidell, LA (SDL) - 1 hour 30 minutes

New Iberia, LA (NIB) - 1 hour 30 minutes

Close:

McComb, MS (MCB) - 1 hour 33 minutes

Well, no one's done if for the Boston area yet, so here it is from my residence in Cambridge, via Google maps driving directions:

- BOS is 11 minutes

- BON is 11 minutes

- BBY is 12 minutes

- WOB is 26 minutes

- FRA is 30 minutes

- RTE is 32 minutes

- HHL is 49 minutes

- WOR is 53 minutes

- PVD is 68 minutes

- EXR is 70 minutes

- DOV is 78 minutes

- DHM is 81 minutes

- WEM is 89 minutes

I count that as 13 within a 90 minute drive, with appropriate disclaimers given for Boston-area traffic. Also, it appears SPG and KIN are just outside the 90 minute requirement.

If the Cape Codder was still with us, the list would have six more entries.

Amtrak stations within 90 mins:

NYP, New Rochelle, Stamford, Yonkers, Croton-Harmon, Newark, Newark Airport, Metropark, New Brunswick, Princeton, Trenton, Cornwell's Heights.

If you add commuter trains, then add all of NJT stations, more than a third of MNRR stations and a third or more of LIRR stations plus several SEPTA stations. Too lazy to count.

Well if you count commuter train stations from LA as jis mentioned, I still have a lot. :)

I do think someone in New Jersey would win though, if it came down to commuter train stops.

And jis, you said every NJTransit stop. Are you less than 90 minutes from AC?

What is this "driving" of which you speak?

I walk ten minutes to get to CUS, and if I need to get to another Amtrak station, well...that's what the train is for.

Amtrak Stations Only: 5!!! (If Other Rail Stations were included Austin has CapMetro's "The Red Line", AKA "The Billion Dollar Boondoggle!", which would give me 7 more!!! Pretty poor for a City of 1,000,000+!!! )

San Antonio (SAS)

San Marcos (SMC)

Taylor (TAY)

Temple (TPL)

Austin (AUS)

Sorry except all of the Atlantic City Line and part of the RiverLINE. My bad.

Reno's station is a 10-minute walk; I can get to the Sparks Ambus stop on a city bus in 20 minutes, but those Ambuses stop at the Reno station anyway. I could theoretically drive to the Truckee and Colfax stations within 90 minutes as well, but that would be silly and I'm not sure my ancient car would make it. So 4 technically, but only 1 is useful/necessary.

Michigan City, IN

South Bend, IN

Elkhart, IN

Waterloo, IN

Bryan, OH

New Buffalo, MI

Niles, MI

Dowagiac, MI

Kalamazoo, MI (home)

Battle Creek, MI

Albion, MI

Jackson, MI

Ann Arbor, MI

East Lansing, MI

Durand, MI

15 total, assuming I drive 75 mph. If I push it (which I tend to do) and go 80 mph, the total is 17. There are a couple stations juuuuuuuust over that 1.5-hour border. ;)

Let's see according to Google Maps:

Wolv

Ann Arbor, MI (Home Station)

--WB

Jackson, MI

Albion, MI

Battle Creek, MI - 1.5hrs

(Kalamzoo is possible, just not legal)

--EB

Greenfield Village, MI

Dearborn, MI

Detroit, MI

Royal Oak, MI

Birmingham, MI

Pontiac, MI

BW

East Lansing, MI - 1.25hrs

Durand, MI

Flint, MI

Lapeer, MI - 1.5hrs

(Port Huron is possible, just not legal)

LSL

Bryan, OH

Toledo, OJ

Sandusky, OH

VIA (not including the wait at customs & immigration)

Windsor

(Sarnia is possible, just not legal)

So a total of 16 Amtrak Station.

If we bend the rules (& the law), it comes to 20.
