New Refund Policy, Effective March 1st, 2014

I have to admit I am not happy with this change. While it may be more in line with what the airlines are doing, I don't think that is a good model to follow. If it were up to me I would return to the good / bad (depending on your point of view) old days when most of the NEC trains were...

    Newest pre Amtrak stations?

While it might not be the newest, I believe that the Toledo Ohio station built in 1950 was likely the largest completely new station build before the start of Amtrak. I believe it had around 155 scheduled trains a day.

Who is on the train today (Christmas Day)?

I was on #11 from Seattle to Oakland, Jack London Sq. the Diner had a turkey dinner in addition to the regular menu. What was a nice treat was the great dome was deadheading on our train. too bad it wasn't accessable. I did have a little scare as when I arrived on #14 on the 21st I was bussed...

    #7 vs tree

I was on #7 heading through Stephens pass early on the 21st having an early breakfast in the diner when there was a bang and we slowed down to stop. It was announced that we hit a downed tree and the windshild of the engine was shattered and it was too dangerious to continue. The enginer was...

pizza delivery to train - success in MSP!!

How was the pizza? I will be on the WB EB on December 19th and that sounds like a fun thing to do. Perfect time for a late night snack.

    Empire Builder next July

I know what you mean. I'm taking the EB this December on points from Chicago to Seattle. Spending a couple of day with my brother in Seattle and then thaking the CS to Oakland to visit some other frineds (I have more segemts in the trip but they don't involve trains). This will be my longest...

    #66/#449

As for 449, I agree it's not a big difference, however, if I remember correctly I think the south side of the train migth be sligthly more interesting from a railfan standpoint.

    Baggage Question

You needen't worry. If you think it would be too unstabel above the seat, there are locations at one of the ends of the car you can stow it.

    Hurricane Sandy and Amtrak.

As for the LSL, I have verified (at least on Saturday) that they are not running the full train to Boston, just the Boston section. I had hoped to see a big long distnace train leaving the area, but alas.

Service to Freeport and Brunswick ME to start Nov 1

That gives me an idea of a really cool thing that will never happen in my lifetime (Hopefully not 66/67 getting a sleeper) but transfering the sleeper from 66/67 to the morning train to Brunswick. I know I'm just dreaming here, but you have to admit it's a pretty cool dream. In the mean time...

To Coast (Starlight) or Not to Coast?

I had a similuar delima. This December I am using up some use or loose vacation and decided to cash in some Amtrak points. I am flying to Chicago (not quite enough points for a 3 zone trip as I have a segment later on). I am taking the EB to Seattle (staying with family) then in the brief window...

    Hurricane Sandy and Amtrak.

I see Amtrak is running 448/449 from Boston to Chicago. I'm wondering if they will just run the full train to Boston, Just the 448/449 cars to Chicago or still split the train with th 48/49 cars terminating in Albany? If I wasn't busy tonight I'd go down to South Station and see for myself.

    Hurricane Sandy and Amtrak.

I think the damage to the shore line may not be that well reported. The tracks are quite close to the ocean and there surely were some washouts. There must also be quite a few tree down as well. In the storm of '38 it took the New Haven 2 weeks to restore shore line service putting all the...

    Unsold Sleepers

If you are getting on a a staffed station that is not the start point of the trip, you might be better off to try to upgrade at the station. I heard that once the train leaves that unsold space reverts to the low bucket price. I did this once going from Atlantic City to Toledo. I was ticketed...

    Amtrak to Long Island

What I thought was amusing (and confusing) in the schedule on this page was that the trains from Pittsburgh and Washington were on Standard time (EST) and the Long Island trains were on Daylight Savings time (DST). It makes you wonder what time the clocks in Penn station were set to.

drop from high bucket to low bucket

I am heading to NYC in a couple of days. I changed my reservation from the 26th to the 25th (to a regional train. The Acela express during the day was something like $135. Today I moved up to an earlier departure and noticed the the same Acela express was now $101.

I'm glad they don't delete members for not posting frequently. While I always have something to say, most of the time it isn't worth reading. :)

$745 million obligated for 2 NEC Projects

That explains it! I took the Acela to NYC the week before last and was a little surprised to see us platform at BBY on track 3! I suspect the completion of the work was done so the tie replacement project (defective concrete ties) would not be a complete scheduling disaster.

Lake Shore from BOS or NYP

I've done both living in Boston and having family in Toledo. The Boston leg is much longer and can be relaxing if you are not in a hurry as it does seem to creep along. One time a while ago I was able to take advantage of a now plugged loophole and favorable scheduling. For the same price as a...
