Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

As I recall, the wording in the RFP says the new cars are to replace the current bilevel cars but doesn't specifically say the new ones must be bilevel too. Anyway, there have been some proposed floor plans that have accessible diners and lounges, with accessible sleepers and coaches next to...

City of New Orleans (train) discussion

Looks like it ran two hours early as 1059.

Will transferred points reset expiration clock?

If you have the AGR credit card your points will not expire. Someone reported, though, that if your credit card account is closed and you haven't had recent activity on your AGR account it will expire immediately.

Part 2 of the exploration of the out of service line is posted, going from the other direction. There are two destroyed bridges.

    Ownership of Amtrak stations?

The feds own the main station building in DC, although Amtrak owns the platforms and tracks,

Can Private Railroads operate passenger service without government help?

From the original Act: That implies that they can't directly compete with Amtrak without their permission. "Corporation" is now Amtrak, and the "contract" is referring to taking over the passenger service. https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/STATUTE-84/pdf/STATUTE-84-Pg1327.pdf

Can Private Railroads operate passenger service without government help?

So is Alaska RR the only one that continued passenger service? I'm not sure if it was even eligible for Amtrak.

    Electric and Hybrid road vehicles

I have had a Kia EV6 for two years now and I'm loving it. I do have a 40A charger in my carport, so I don't need chargers around town. Longest road trip I've taken is Phoenix to Los Angeles. I didn't have any issues, though there is not a lot of chargers. Can't comment on the cold since I live...

Can Private Railroads operate passenger service without government help?

The problem with directly running passenger trains is there a whole big retail customer service system that doesn't exist anymore. They'd much rather rent the space on their track and let someone else deal with that, or not have passenger trains at all.

Gateway Project/New York Penn Station capacity improvement

From the pictures from the roof issues they had a few months ago, it looks like no catenary or third rail.

Getting from Accessible Bedroom to Observation Car

I'm pretty sure the diner is only on the single-level trains. For the Superliner the lower level lounge would be the only option. And yes, it would have to be across the platform.

Getting from Accessible Bedroom to Observation Car

Officially, there's an option to transfer between your room and the lower level of the lounge at scheduled stops, but I haven't heard of anyone doing it. https://www.amtrak.com/planning-booking/accessible-travel-services/meal-services-for-passengers-with-a-disability.html

    BART derailment 1/1/24

The initial problem was a communication failure which is why the dispatcher could not see or set the switches and they had to be set manually. Not sure what visual indications there are for the switches.

    BART derailment 1/1/24

Okay, now I think I see. The driver was to set the switches at the crossover to straight through. The driver accidentally sets both to crossover instead. The train drives over the first switch the wrong way (trailing move). The train follows the second crossover and the driver realizes the...

Gateway Project/New York Penn Station capacity improvement

The rule is that there has to be exits, which the Empire Connection has. You can't put exits in a single tube under the Hudson without someplace like a second tube to go to.

Gateway Project/New York Penn Station capacity improvement

The biggest problem with one tube is the lack of escape routes. Current best practice is to build two tubes with crossovers.

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

My best guess would be no, at least at the connecting station. Once the connection has officially departed and the connecting passengers are no-shows is probably when the inventory opens up.

The line is open. #4 went through the area at about 15mph.

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

They did bus bridge the passengers. The new #3 is only about 90 minutes late. #4 is 8 hours late. The Apache County Sheriff's Facebook page has some pictures. Some reefer units are broken open and the track is pretty torn up. Check the comments for additional pictures.

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

BNSF had a derailment in eastern Arizona. #3 is turning at Albuquerque to become #4, and #4 is turning at Winslow to become #3. No word about a bus bridge.
