New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

I read somewhere over a week ago that there will be one day lag in Washington from 92 to 29 in equipment run through. Cardinal takes about 7 or 8 hours longer longer than the Capitol. That is not an option for anyone but endpoint railfans and not with 2 coaches, which they have no intention of...

Pennsylvanian (the train(s) and route) discussion

Amazing (or maybe not) - Amtrak can find another two Amfleet-2 cars when they want to for a daytime corridor train, but not a 3rd coach for the Cardinal, nor any plans to. Gardner's and Harris's passive aggression towards that train is in plain sight, especially with Manchin leaving the Senate...

VIA Rail Long Distance (LD) and Inter-Regional fleet replacement

The 2nd hand HEP-I and HEP-II coaches all sit on trucks transplanted from the CC&F Blue fleet. So for them, they have a standard truck depsite coming from a variety of US railroads.

VIA Rail Long Distance (LD) and Inter-Regional fleet replacement

Australia's transcon train has some Budd-looking equipment. Maybe it was a Budd-licensee, but I don't know. Maybe they'll look at that for inspiration. I think Canada's version of ADA also means there will never be a dome car again, though maybe a SAL Sun Lounge type of thing.

VIA Rail Long Distance (LD) and Inter-Regional fleet replacement

Correct. Just as well, from what I have seen, I don't like Amtrak's designs one bit.

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

One reason Amtrak literally raped the Capitol Ltd down to 3 Superliners, even worse than the Texas Eagle, is they could not stand its horrible equipment utilization. With all the other eastern low level trains with reduced consists, they could have converted it to low level right then and there...

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

I don't remember the exact dates, but for about 6 months during the pandemic.

If they thru-routed the Capitol with the Meteor instead, they would multiple hours in DC to make up time.

New train (40-41 Floridian) between Miami and Chicago via Washington DC

I am surprised the Cardinal did not also get the axe north of DC. With its miniature consist, it is low hanging fruit, and never was a big passenger hauler when it was larger. If this will go on for 3 years, 18 months per ER tube, I would reroute the Capitol Star via Philly, assuming NS would...

Indiana is extremely generous with NICTD, but will not spend a penny for an Amtrak service.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

What some people have told me is the Horizon cars have long since been corroding, but not in palces that you can see. So there's that white dust accumulating behind panels. In the 1970's, Amtrak maintenance people with Sunnyside yard pedigrees, some of whom relocated to Chicago, absolutely...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion H1 2024

Those are not CN/VIA Tempo cars but ex-GO Transit commuter cars ("GO Carts") with some pretty awful, rough riding trucks. Yes, I rode them 4 times in the 2000's.

Connecticut DOT new car order for Alstom

I don't think the cab cars will ever be used as intermediate coaches. The ends appear to be slightly sloped, there are no diaphragms, chains, or grab irons. The threshold plate does not even protrude. The end door is there for eventual operation on the Park Av tunnels to Grand Central and...

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

0.3 million gross ticket revenue 0.5 million operating expense Sees sto mean farebox recovery is 60%. The need to find another coach to add to the consists so they will have 5, like the Hiawathas do. Since this train replaced one of those frequencies, capacity went down by 20% (less 15 in Biz...

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

Counter-intuitive that eastbound carries less than westbound since the eastbound is likely carrying some Train 8 refugees when it is hours late.

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

They weren't converted from 84 seaters. They came in LD configuration from Red Lion, and some sent straight from there, along with some 84 seaters, to the west coast. The Amfleet on the Pioneer and Seattle locals from 1977 to around 1981 never saw the NEC. The mutliple unit door control was...

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

I don't go along with the theory that the low-frills train will win in all circumstances, or that unnecessary operation of fanciful equipment with be a train's death knell. In Fall 2004, they had the choice to kill the Capitol Ltd, a Superliner train that was poorly patronized east of...
