Is a roomette two people or one?

So if I wanted to redeem points for two in a bedroom on the Coast Starlight from SAN to SEA, the 25,000 points would also cover both tickets on the Surfliner, right? And no extra points needed for Business Class? Am I understanding this correctly?

I had thought I've seen everything

You sure can tell you are very tired, Marc. Just a suggestion-Velcro Dots. You can put them anywhere, and they are removable, too. You can check them out here. We usually leave the curtains on the window open at night-we're usually in an upstairs bedroom-but the curtains on the door sometimes...

First thing you want to do on an Amtrak train

RELAX!!! It really depends on where we are leaving from, and which direction we are traveling. Since we usually are in a bedroom, first thing would be to stow our bags, then my shoes come off. Since it is usually late night when we leave, we may crack open some wine and cheese then lay out clothes...

    AGR Shopping

Drugstore.com -7 points per dollar, free shipping over $25 is a good one. So is 123 inkjets- that one is 18 points per dollar. Shoebuy.com is another good one....I think it's 12 points per dollar. They have lots of stuff besides shoes.

    Bedroom Redemption

Thanks for the response! We have enough for a round trip, thanks to the new AGR 30% free bonus points. We will be calling AGR soon! We've done it once before, and it was great!

    Bedroom Redemption

Hello Everybody, I just wanted to check (last minute jitters) before calling and redeeming the points. Will 20,000 point be enough to go from SLC>OLW one way? I don't want to call to redeem and find out I have had the info wrong all this time. Thanks!

    Proposed Amtrak Status Map Change

John, It's great the way it is, but if you want to change it, then go for it. I like being able to see the EB, CS, and CZ all on one page. I actually check your map quite often! Thanks for all your hard work!

    Sleeping Car – Non-Berth Service

I've read of people doing just that-but turning the bunk into a sort of play area for their kids. I think it would be better in a Viewliner because there is a window up there and it's a little taller up there. My experiences have been in Superliners only. I do think you could seat 4 in a...

    Sleeping Car – Non-Berth Service

We took a ride in a bedroom sleeper in 2009 on the Coast Starlight, and one of our relatives under 15 was going to join up with us along the way. I called Amtrak to find out what the policy for underage in coach was, and she cheerfully explained it and then offered to add him to our bedroom...

    Pacific Parlour Car Rules

I'm sure they have rules about children being in the PPC on the Coast Starlight during the Wine and Cheese Tasting, but the two times we rode in '09, they were not enforced. When we were heading north, a couple with two young children, around 3 or 4 years and 5 or 6 years were allowed to sit...

How do you pack so much?

Granny, Try this instead. Repack the bag for the overhead, based on what you will need when you board. If you are boarding at night leave out the change of clothes, toiletries, & put them in the other bag. Put your change of clothes in a travel size space bag in the other bag, along with any...

    Goodbye from Caravanman

Eddie, I'm gad you're sticking around! I love reading your trip reports & hints for travel. As far as Facebook, I joined it fairly recently, & I have everything set to private. I do have a couple of friends from AU on mine, & haven't had any problems. I'm glad the person involved apologized...

Just to travel on the train...

I second going from Chicago west to Emeryville (the California Zephyr), then take the Coast Starlight north to Seattle. We did this run from Salt Lake City, Ut to Sacramento, Ca then to Olympia, Wa, around the end of June. It was a nice trip. If you want to do a stop off in between, Glenwood...

Concerned about TSA at major stations.

Amtrak apparently will give you ice if needed to keep your insulin cool, as listed here. I assume you would have ask the train attendant in coach, or maybe someone in the diner.

Questions about upcoming trip on SC

As far as the bathroom after a shower, you could use your towel to wipe things down. There is a shower curtain in there. I read somewhere that you can remove the roll of toilet paper, but I haven't tried using the bedroom shower. I felt that since I didn't have my train legs, I was better off...

    Another Fatality

An update. Apparently he was deaf. I don't think there were bars or flashers in that area where it happened. It's right near where we used to live, there are RR tracks all over that area.

    Camp Trip

Beau, Welcome to the board. Here are some ideas for you. Get several "Space Bags", put everything that will fit into them. They compress quite well, so you should be able to get all your clothes & probably your pillow in there too. If your pillow & or sleeping bag still will not fit in your...

Would you consider this a Fail??

IMHO, I would rather be heading for my destination than waiting in a station or airport for who knows how long, with limited services, such as food & drink. Considering the snow conditions, I am not surprised to see the problem with the door. Now if the door was stuck all the way open, then...
