    Coach Passengers visiting Sleeper Passengers?

There's at least one Superliner sleeper where the sign actually says "Frist Class Passengers Only." I am not making this up.

Pullman Rail Journeys cheaper than Amtrak

Amtrak does seem to know how to make pain grillé français.

VIA announces new cars, amenity upgrades

Once you add in the LD plane experience, is the effective per-mile train fare even close to being competitive?

What is happening to the SWC route?

I'd consider Wichita basically a replacement for Hutchinson. There may be the opportunity to pick up a few passengers who aren't currently willing to drive to HUT (or NEW for that matter) but for the most part it will probably be the same people riding the train, just boarding at a different stop.

    Name That Station!

    Yes, it is Waterloo.

    Name That Station!

Not Claremont or anywhere else in NH. Hint: This was not part of the original 1971 Amtrak route network.

    Boarding the LSL

In my experience boarding the LSL at CHI, passengers are grouped by destination without regard to whether they are on 48 or 448. They will ask your destination (not the train number) to direct you to the correct car. All coach pax to SDY will likely be in the same car; they will not send some...

    downgraded place settings?

After the whinging about sold-out hot dogs, it's interesting to note that the old menu has only one children's selection for lunch and dinner, and none for breakfast.

    Name That Station!

This recently restored station was never used by Amtrak, although there is an Amtrak stop visible from here.

    Name That Station!

No trick, Jim, you've correctly identified the station. Now if someone can just tell us why Amtrak thinks it's a good idea to have two signs of different styles right next to each other ...

This should be an easy one -_-

    Wine and Cheese Report (again)!

Yes. IIRC $5/glass or $25/bottle, compared to $6/glass or $15/half bottle for whatever they are serving in the dining car.

    EMY-DEN one zone?

Both types of bedrooms are the same number of points, but the "standard" bedroom only allows two occupants with an AGR redemption. You would need an open sleeper ticket (the price should be the same as a low bucket coach fare) for the third person. With the family bedroom, the points would...

Hey! When did they start selling t-shirts?

Even better! Use the Chase Ink card for 5x Ultimate Rewards points, transferrable to Amtrak.

Dinner on train coming into NYC at 6:30

There have been rumors that 48 and 30 might eventually swap departure times from CHI, making the Cap the cleanup train. If that happens, I assume the LSL would begin serving dinner out of CHI and the CL would discontinue doing so (and probably serve lunch the next day instead).

when/why did Amtrak get rid of "coach," "sleeper," etc

The newer trains have electronic signs next to the door, but even the older trains generally have some sort of identification posted. And often it is rather important to be in the right car.

    Southwest Chief Delays

I have an upcoming connection from the SWC to the CS. If the SWC is on time or early, a visit to Philippe for Second Breakfast is the plan. At two hours or so late, I assume they hold the CS a few minutes and connecting passengers go directly from one train to the other. Beyond that, what...

National Train Day Saturday May 10th 2014

That pretty much summarizes my impression, compared to two years ago. I arrived on the true-to-its-nickname LSL and was surprised to find no line for the equipment tours. On the other hand, the excursions were sold out in advance, when previously it was possible to get a spot on the day of...
