    Coast Starlight this Morning

Unfortunately I don't have anything relevant to tell you. Whatever trip you would take would be through some other business that chartered the coaches. What I went on was organized by the owners themselves, for themselves and their friends. Apples and oranges.

    Coast Starlight this Morning

I smiled to see this topic. The Silvers were repositioned from NorCal to LAUS for a trip I was on. The cars are owned by two members of a university alumni group. That group arranged a day trip from LAUS to San Diego and back for group members and friends (I counted as a friend). Surfliners...

    Builder + Coast Starlight

I was debating with myself if I should call Customer Relations. The EB wasn't bad but it was certainly disappointing. Or maybe I just suffer from lowered expectations caused by hanging around this board too much. :giggle:

    Builder + Coast Starlight

On October 20, a friend and I rode the Builder from Chicago to Portland, then caught the Coast Starlight to L.A. We had a bedroom on both trains. This isn't a trip report, but some random observations. The equipment on the Builder did not live up to the "premier" marketing. Many (if not the...

    Isn't it ironic

The woman didn't get more specific than "my thoughts and experiences about Amtrak" so I'll never know the exact purpose of the focus group or what I could have told them.

    Isn't it ironic

Received a call today from a market research firm that wants to pay me $100 for two hours' worth of my thoughts about Amtrak. It would be on the evening of Thursday, Oct 21, the very time that I'll be near East Glacier Park, MT, headed west on the Builder. So because I'll be on Amtrak I can't...

LAUS...What can you do in 8 hours?

Tourists. Harumph! Best thing to do anytime you're in a strange environment (even a large parking lot that you've never used before) is whip out your smartphone and program your location. My iPhone has an app called "backtrack." I can set up to three "remember this location" buttons...

LAUS...What can you do in 8 hours?

Someone else mentioned Angels Flight, and I'll second that. Exit the 4th St. portal from the Pershing Square Red/Purple Line station. If you'll be here (there for you, here for me) on a Saturday, take a look at the Downtown walking tours put on by the L.A. Conservancy. There're inexpensive and...

    Pacific Surfliner Breakdown Saturday 8/21/10

I wasn't on the recent one, but I was on a similar clusterf*** a couple of years ago in which a one hour trip from Irvine to LAUS turned into a three hour marathon. Of course, that was on a day when I was on a very tight schedule in L.A., so the delay was like throwing not a monkey wrench but...

This is exacltly why I'll keep to the rails thank you

In a similar manner, I've had some uncomfortable experiences trying to back into this country from Canada. ICE is like TSA on steroids. What I don't care for, in general, is that I'm supposed to act happy when I'm barraged with questions about where I'm going and what I'm doing and where I'm...

First trip on Pacific Surfliner - some questions

First trip on Pacific Surfliner - some questions

A couple of comments: the Flickr photo isn't a line to check baggage, it's the line of people at the "departure gate" waiting for the boarding announcement. Secondly, I believe that when checking baggage at LAUS you do it at the ticket window.

    Pacific Surfliner question

Another option if you take a train to Anaheim: Metrolink is probably 1/2 the price of Amtrak, because Surfliner fares bump up every summer. Another option from the Anaheim station: Anaheim runs its own loop shuttle (called ART) that probably goes to your hotel's door for much less than a taxi.

Thanks for the clarification. I hadn't heard anything about LAUS being evacuated! ;)

    Train Day L.A. 2010

It was sooooo crowded I did a once-through then left. Did at least get to greet Whooz + EA before they departed.

My daughter wanted me to ask...

It takes only an hour to see the sign, so you may still be able to fit it in, especially if the SL comes in early. Walk downstairs to the Metro Red Line. Take it to Hollywood and Highland (about 20-25 minutes). When you exit the station, walk up the stairs to your left, into the Hollywood and...
