    Silver Star consist

This isn't going to help much. The answer is yes. I have seen it with both two and three sleepers (I suspect the third is part crew dorm, perhaps part revenue) and with three and four coaches. I seem to remember three coaches on one direction and four on the other on May 10 when we...

USA Rail Passes - Open to Americans

Maybe the complaints we forwarded did some good. I know I had sent more than one telling them they were alienating (sorry for the pun) foreign visitors who bought the pass and then couldn't book seats and had to get an airline ticket, or rent a car, to fill gaps in their trip caused by "sorry...

    Reroute?

    Probably a faulty ribbit.

    First time rider

If you ask that at Tampa Union Station you will get some pretty strange looks!!  Come to think of it, I don't think they even HAVE Redcaps at Tampa Union Station.

    Sunset must go daily

That might be more productive and less offensive for the other members of the Board. Then you should realize, vis-a-vis the Sunset, that what needs to happen is a very distinct change in U.P.'s operations, first, and, second, for all non-daily trains, including Sunset to be made daily. Do they...

    Sunset must go daily

Personally, I would NOT want to take a bus from NOL to ORL. If they did run a bus, it would only have to go JAX-NOL anyway, with Silver Service trains connecting in both directions at JAX. And frankly it would be a much shorter connection to just run ATL-JAX or ATL-SAV by bus, and the Crescent...

    Gas Prices and Amtrak

Where do I sign up?    GML, as the Aussies would say, "Good On You" for your conservational driving behavior and not feeling the need to have something that runs through petrol like ---- through a goose. And the behavior of too many drivers is baffling, not just the...

    Florida Short Trips

One more follow-up on the Florida Railpass. It does, I am now told, include the thruway bus up through Ocala, Gainesville, etc., to JAX. The web site says otherwise but the Support Desk (referred from "Agent" ) says that even though the web site says otherwise, that bus should be included. He...

    Gas Prices and Amtrak

Yes and No. In the southeast (and a lot of other places, I believe), we are under watering restrictions. There is a realization that no matter how much money you have, that doesn't entitle you to waste a precious resource. Petrol ought to, and I expect eventually will, be run the same way...

    Sunset must go daily

My understanding is that 40% of Sunset's passenger miles pre-Katrina were EAST of NOL, and that's less than 40% of the route miles. Second, running Acela through Orlando would require a VERY long extension cord.

    Gas Prices and Amtrak

(begin mil - subj comment ) Since my post in this thread got sandwiched by a couple of mil-oriented posts, I would have to agree, having been stationed (Navy) in "The Gulf" not terribly far from where those folks are talking about, that even (I hope) for those of us that think we shouldn't have...

getting on board with amtrak's needs

Amen. Profit of more than 35 years' worth of funding funding for Amtrak in just a half-year is a pretty large chunk of change, and it comes out of our pockets. I see no rational way to look at it differently. Record cost to us = record profits to them, no matter how they rationalize it...

    Sunset must go daily

We also need to remember that the (intact) Sunset IS (was) the Southern Transcontinental Route for the U.S.A., which Katrina broke and CSX FIXED but Amtrak has so far refused to resume, holding the balance of the route hostage to try to extort a ransom from LA/MS/AL/FL in order to restart it...

    Improving the Sunset

Unless something truly extraordinary happens, the Sunset east of NOL probably IS dead. Whether we end up with JAX-NOL service, perhaps daily, is another subject, and at least slightly more likely, depending on the amount of political pressure that can be brought after the current...

    Improving the Sunset

Two points. One, SFD (Sanford regular depot, NOT Auto-Train) no longer exists. The station deteriorated to where it was condemned, and 91/92/97/98 is no longer a station stop. No stops between Winter Park and Deland any more. There will be a new station on the (eventual) Orlando Corridor...

    Florida Short Trips

And as another confusing followup to the Florida Amtrak subject, apparently the system will not allow booking Orlando Corridor travel directly to Ocala, Gainesville, etc. It won't let me book ORL-OCA or WPK-OCA. But MIA-OCA is ok, or even WTH-OCA. And WPK-WTH-OCA multi-city works (same day)...

    Gas Prices and Amtrak

The price of gas is certainly having an effect on lifestyles. I see Hummers parked for extensive periods of time - much more than in the past. My real hope is that Congress will develop some backbone and mandate MUCH higher fuel efficiency standards for all vehicles in this country. Not just...

    Florida Short Trips

Actually it's not the lawyers as much as a member of the state senate and the Lakeland businesses that were the (hopefully and probably) temporary impediment to finalizing the Orlando corridor commuter rail project. The state senator from the Lakeland had, as his pet project, the HSR corridor...

    Increasing Revenue

Actually, if Amtrak were given the money to buy up the second or third track land that a lot of the freights are not using when they tore up those tracks to save maintenance money, (with the result that they are in gridlock because of the huge increase in freight being carried), and then...

    Crew Hotels

In Miami a helpful station agent once got us a room at the hotel the crews stayed at, and even got us the crew room rate. No problems, and it was a nice hotel. It's a hotel, not a crew dorm. And most of the crewmembers we've had a chance to get to know "off the job" have been pretty nice...
