After I threatened to send it to the "Old Phone's Home", it straightened up it's act  - and is fine now!
Is my parade set up and ready to go in DC? After all, when the_traveler comes to WAS, shouldn't it be a national holiday?  (It's not like it happens every day! :p )
If you have the time and want a nice place to have a cold one, walk across the station to the Capitol City Brewing Co. There is cute little bartender serving the bar patrons named Alma. Tell her that Rich's friend Fernando says hello. This is a favorite watering hole for the DC MARC commuters heading home for the day. I miss the place but happy my commuting days are over. :)

Some NS track is rough, but still I slept well and did not wake up until about 8. At that time we were "near" ATL - but it was raining and 19 was about 30 minutes late! We arrived and departed ATL 30 minutes late. Upon departure, we moved a few miles and then stopped! By the time I arrived about 45 minutes late and it was still raining.

So I waited in the "beautiful" BHM station! (It's as spartan as I remember!)

#20 has been running a few minutes early (anywhere from 5 to 20) all night.

Here's a question:

I was under the impression that at a flag stop, if nobody is getting on or off, the train does not need to stop and can leave as soon as possible. Last night, 20 was running early and stopped in Toccoa, GA (a flag stop) and stayed there until departure time! Is this normal?

Well can't leave until the scheduled departure time. If someone was racing toward the station to indeed catch the train, I'm sure they wouldn't be happy if the train left early.

Yes, I agree - but this is a FLAG stop! The train does not even stop if there are no passengers on or off! So why would it have to wait - especially when you have to make a reservation?
Thats surprising to you, thats a miracle! That would be like Alan not knowing how to address a question about Amtrak or computers!Probably the engineer had a hold order,I dont think you use a scanner AFAIK,but thats all I could think of unless, as Chris said, maybe someone was supposed to get on and theyd notified Amtrak and failed to show up???Its a mystery, perhaps one of our OBS members or Amtrak employees have the answer?

Normally that is correct, the train does not need to stop and stay for the scheduled departure time. However, you didn't say that you knew positively that no one was boarding. Additionally, even if no one actually boarded, perhaps there was someone scheduled to board who never showed. So the question becomes, did you actually hear the crew say that no one was expected to get on/off the train.

Even then, perhaps the engineer needed to copy an order and did it while at the station. Or perhaps they were ordered to stay there to allow another train to pass.

The final chapter of the trip from A to ? is being written as we speak! :( But there's a story to that too. But you'll have to tune in for the trip report to find out! (Cliffhanger! :p )

But I will tell you #88 was 30 minutes late. (Teaser :p )

the_traveler has finally returned "home" (wherever that is  ) at about 6:30 PM on Saturday 8/29! :( (#88 was about 30 minutes late :( - one of the few trains that were. :) )

Now, I have to present all the notes to the screenwriters to produce a work of fiction something Oscar winning! I promise to go to LA to pick up my reward - via the SDL loophole , of course! :p

The screenwriters have informed me that the script has been forwarded to post production, and they notified me that the 1st episode of the mini series will be released to a select few locations on September 2. I'm hoping that AU was chosen as one of those few select locations!

It's a great trip! I highly recommend it! In fact, and I do mean this seriously, it was your talking about it here on the forum in the first place that got the idea rattling around in my empty head! So, Traveler, I have you to think for getting the ball rolling for me in what, so far, was the Amtrak trip of a lifetime!

Your head is going to get so big from your new found stardom that it will soon not fit into a roomette! Anyway, as you can see below, you have fans gathering, anxiously in wait for episode 1!
