    Kansas City train trip?

use the max (kcata.org) and skip the car. it won't take you to arthur bryant's, but i've found their BBQ to be overrated. a much better option is jack stack, which is right near the train station. if you must rent a car, there are thrifty (20th street) and budget (westin crown center) counters...

    Megabus

i've taken megabus between KCY and STL and it's great. unfortunately, it's far more competitive (4 hrs) than our state-sponsored amtrak service (6 hours, with frequent delays). inter-city bus travel was drying up before they debuted, so it's good to have another option.

    SEND AMTRAK MESSAGE MAY 17

as simply a passenger, can someone enlighten me on what the elimination of the assistant conductor would mean to me? i rarely see them once my ticket is taken. will the lights start flickering? will the train derail? since we're all interested in seeing amtrak survive, if this cut can be made...

if i'm not mistaken, this is the BNSF "coal line"...

    Missouri Mules cancelled

it's only a problem if your originating city is somewhere on the mules route besides STL and KCY. if you're in KC, the best and fastest way to CHI is on the SWC.

A way Amtrak can become profitable over night.

would anyone want federally-subsidized gambling until this made amtrak profitable?

    Missouri Mules cancelled

for only two trains a day, this route does rather well and is quite popular despite being threatened constantly by the missouri house and UP dispatching.

Traveling Cheap - Hostels and other ideas

i stayed in two hostels while i was on the canadian leg of my cross-country trip. the canadiana backpackers inn in toronto (4 bunk room) was clean and well-managed. the HI-montreal was not as clean (6 bunk room), but the people were cooler. both were great locations. i've seen the HI-chicago and...

No more Sunset Ltd trains 19 and 20 will run in it's place

why spend any money on the sunset (or any other LD route) before you get a law that carries fines for the worst of the host railroads? amtrak should only be expanding in areas that can improve its OTP that politicians love to use as an excuse to destroy it.

How about we share some good interactions we have had with Amtrak Empl

robin, my sleeping car attendant on the CS (4/10/07), was most fabulous. i left her a hand-written thank you and $20 tip. she really was superb. too bad she was on my first leg of the trip, because no one after that came close! also, shirley in the SWC dining car (4/6/07) was really a gas. it...

    Hesitant to RIDE again!

i'm happy to report that my LSL experience was decent. i am not a fan of the viewliner sleepers. i was so looking forward to boarding the SWC later that day in chicago so i could return to the comfort of the superliner. if i had to book it over again, i'd have gone out of my way to board in NYP...

    Amtrak in the movies........

planes, trains, and automobiles... but i don't think the train is called amtrak.

    Hesitant to RIDE again!

i just logged about 7,000 amtrak miles on my current cross-country excursion and i saw no horrifying incidents the entire time. other than a few late trains and only a *single* grumpy conductor, i've had really great experiences. for all that traveling, i offer one tidbit of advice: take your...

    Planning Adirondack Trip

i just finished a one-way trip on the adirondack from MTR to NYP. that track up north is incredibly rough, possible the worst i've experienced on my cross-country trip. our customs experience was about 30 mins., and two people were taken off the train. the cafe car takes canadian and US dollars...

LD trains-Assign Seats at Reservation Time

ditto. i thought it was interesting that we were assigned seats before boarding the cascades. it makes sense to add a bit of order to the boarding process on other trains. as an aside, my corridor train on VIA between toronto and montreal was assigned seating before boarding, but the train...

Diner service on Zephyr & Empire Builder

having ridden the EB right after rides on the SWC and CS, i'm not sure what all the fuss is about. the food was not dramatically better, and i tired of the "legacy" menu as quickly as i did the SDS menu on the other trains. i did like the bob evans scramble. the made-to-order eggs on the EB...

Tips for long distance coach travel

i just finished a series of long trips (SWC, CS, EB) and never used my baby wipes or hand sanitizer. i guess i thought i'd be roughing it, but a bathroom was always a stone's throw from my coach seat. i ditched both during my trip. the neck pillow was a life-saver, and i never felt the need for...
