Thanks for everyone's ideas. I'm never sure if I'm going to Oregon or not, so I never book in advance. I guess with Amtrak's cancellation policy I should just reserve it far in advance to get the cheaper prices. I will be driving out with family on the 17th of June, but on the 24th I will need...

I've read a few posts about people saying they have gotten good deals on rooms. Is there a trick or hints anyone would like to share on how to go about this? Or is it just a matter of calling Amtrak and asking. Thanks.

The only food I can remember liking is the black bean burger for lunch. I never eat breakfast and can't remember the suppers. Maybe the steak, but it wasn't memorable.

No, I would never do that, that's why I asked if there was somewhere else I could go to read. Quite a few people suggested the lounge. And I should probably ask for an aisle seat in coach, too. Thanks for everyone's help.
