At the time Amtrak California discontinued their off-peak fares, both Spokker and I commented here that the new fares are just not worth it. Since then, I've been shifting my travel to Metrolink or using my motorcycle. I have to believe lots of other riders are making similar decisions.

For embarking and disembarking needs, there are tracks apenty as is. The issue is that both operators like to store trains on platform tracks between runs and LAUS doesn't have tail tracks. The Metrolink yard is a mile or two north of the station and the Amtrak yard is a couple of miles south—...

I'm going to disagree with you. Japan does use a gate system, but it's my understanding the Continent is generally ungated and unprotected. One reason is because of extensive platform sharing: a local train might be followed by a TGV might be followed by a regional. A gateless system also...
