Article about Charles O'Rear "Photographing the Dawn of Amtrak

Most of the passengers seem to be Geritol users.

The security videos shown at the station

…which sorta proves the pointlessness of the demo, doesn't it? The dude saw a live demonstration of a 1-step process and still couldn't do it himself.

The security videos shown at the station

What I find interesting about the "this is how you buckle a seatbelt" demo is that the attendants have to then walk the aisle and check that each person't seatbelt is fastened. So, for the 99% of us who have mastered the 1950s technology of a seatbelt, why not simply announce "Buckle your seat...

    New Talgo interior shots

Surfliner cars carry three bikes each, so a standard consist (three coaches, one business, one snack coach (no racks) and one Superliner (no racks)) can carry 12 bikes. During Summer, the racks can fill. The new corridor coaches on order have permanent room for three and a convertible...

Amtrak CA drops again in August

At the time Amtrak California discontinued their off-peak fares, both Spokker and I commented here that the new fares are just not worth it. Since then, I've been shifting my travel to Metrolink or using my motorcycle. I have to believe lots of other riders are making similar decisions.

    LAUS Tracks 13,14, & 15 Almost Done

Regarding LAUS and Hollywood. Note that Metro now owns the station.

    LAUS Tracks 13,14, & 15 Almost Done

Amidst all the doom and gloom of life in the 21st century, I count it as a genuine victory that not only did LAUS, as a physical plant, escape the fate of so many other great train stations, but that it rose from the depths of that sad 1980 timetable to become busier now than it ever was in its...

    LAUS Tracks 13,14, & 15 Almost Done

I don't know who's selling that notion, but I'm not buying it. NOUPT: LAUS: Any questions?

    LAUS Tracks 13,14, & 15 Almost Done

Amazing to see that diagram. Thanks for posting it. Some questions arise:   What's the purpose of tracks C and D? They look lonely out there. Track 17 is called out as storage but not C and D, so C and D might have been used for something else… but what? It looks like the throat has seven...

    LAUS Tracks 13,14, & 15 Almost Done

For embarking and disembarking needs, there are tracks apenty as is. The issue is that both operators like to store trains on platform tracks between runs and LAUS doesn't have tail tracks. The Metrolink yard is a mile or two north of the station and the Amtrak yard is a couple of miles south—...

    LAUS Tracks 13,14, & 15 Almost Done

The track grade is already elevated and the 101 (not the 5) is already in a trench, so the rails have to be raised only 5-7 feet or so to clear the freeway. The plan is to build run-throughs (or at least plan and engineer run-throughs) for HSR at the same time as for Amtrak/Metrolink, which...

    LAUS Tracks 13,14, & 15 Almost Done

This image is from a presentation to the Metro board. North is to the left. The existing throat is on the north side; the run-throughs will be on the south side. The presentation is here.

eTickets and Gate Agents Don't Agree

Regardless of what gate agents claim to do, that the entire position is unnecessary can be seen at LAX: it's the fifth busiest station in the country with over 1.5 million Amtrak passengers (plus Metrolink, plus Metro Rail) and no gate agents. You can wander onto any platform at any time. Yet...

eTickets and Gate Agents Don't Agree

I'm going to disagree with you. Japan does use a gate system, but it's my understanding the Continent is generally ungated and unprotected. One reason is because of extensive platform sharing: a local train might be followed by a TGV might be followed by a regional. A gateless system also...
