New Orleans does have a shop but I am not sure how well they are equipped to deal with wheel problems in a 12 hour window. I am sure that they have a jack to lift one end of a car to replace an axle/wheel, but am not sure what their spare serviceable wheel/axle inventory is or was on that given day.
If their inventory was zero, then just another example of skimping on spare parts by management. Wheels are always needed. NOL probably sees ~ 120 - 150 inbound wheels in a day on cars and locos.

I would be surprised if that was the reason for not fixing it. But when one is on a crusade I suppose any cause will do :D

I saw the Crescent in Atlanta this morning with an odd consist. They had one sleeper and two baggage/sleeper combos. I was the same earlier in the week.

What hit the Crescent overnight near Atlanta?? Says an unauthorized vehicle
I live close enough to this crossing that I can hear the whistle... but I was fast asleep at the time of the accident. There is barely 20 feet between the tracks and the intersection, so people stop on the tracks all the time. They even added additional warning signs over the summer to try to raise awareness. Add on to that people who try to beat the train and it is a recipe for disaster. I saw someone come within five feet of getting hit at that crossing just a few months ago.
