The Downeaster is a definite winner in the outsourcing but is run by a seperate authority. I see nothing wrong with the crew being handed a tray and asked to go eat in the bottom section of the sightseer lounge. If OBS crew were on here they'd probably howl but you don't see the kitchen staff...

I learned one very good lesson in 30 plus years of RR'ing...never say never on the RR! We had conductors that would have bet their first born that cabooses would never be in museums and that's where they are today...

Ed...across the pond we Yanks call it "You're preaching to the choir". I rode coach for many years since I was too young to remember...some trains didn't have sleepers so you were stuck. I've ridden coach, pulled them around as an engineer and switched them but at no time can I remember them...

Send some of those nice people down here Betty. The Sunset is getting retro-freaky lately. I don't mind the drug dogs getting on in Lake Charles but it's the savory characters they de-train I don't care for !!! :cool:

Not I...with the ridership increasing every year, and the lack of additional equipment, LD coach almost remind me of packed airplanes. Just remember you have to endure every other pax (and their kiddos) behavior irregardless if they are reading or throwing up last night's Bourbon Street beer...

The Crescent # 19 backed up to the the bumper and stopped at NOUPT (NOL) at 4:28 AM this morning...WOW !!!

Not having seen the plans for the full bags I can't really make a realistic judgment (#1 question would be; is there a place to put windows without cutting the structural integrity of the car?) but the next time you ride any Amtrak piece of equipment, locomotives included, look at the embossment...

And I think the FRA would get involved in structural changes to an existing piece of rolling stock....

And what about windows ???

Jim, I suspect with so few bag/dorms that not all routes will be able to be covered by the new single level cars. I haven't done the math but I just don't think they'll be enough combine cars to go around for every train, every day. That being said it would be a crap shoot to spend the $$$ to...
